Portland, Maine- The Eastern League has selected Portland Sea Dogs' outfielder Zach Daeges as the Eastern League Player of the Month for May.
Daeges hit an Eastern League best .414 in 26 games in the month of May with 11 doubles, one home run, 14 RBI, 17 runs scored, and walked 29 times. The 24-year old reached base safely in 32 consecutive games from April 9th through June 2nd. It is the longest streak in the Eastern League this season and fourth best in franchise history behind Kevin Youkilis (62), Kevin Millar (46), and Jed Lowrie (38). Daeges established franchise records for most walks in a month (29) and best on base percentage (.556). He was selected the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of May 12-18th (8-for-20 .400, HR, 7 RBI).
In 39 games this season for the Sea Dogs, Daeges is hitting .341, fifth in the Eastern League. His .471 on base percentage ranks second in the Eastern League. Daeges was on the disabled list from April 14th to May 2nd with a sprained wrist. The Harlan, Iowa resident was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round of the June 2006 draft.
Last season at Single-A Lancaster, Daeges led the California League with 125 runs, 113 RBI, 170 hits, 81 extra base hits, 55 doubles, and ranked third with a .330 average. He was selected to the California League All-Star team.
