Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- The logo for the Trenton Thunder, Double A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, has been named the "Best Redesign" in Minor League Baseball according to the latest issue of Baseball America magazine.
The Thunder logo won an online vote at baseballamerica.com by capturing 54% of the over 1,200 votes cast. The Toledo Mudhens of the Triple A International League finished second of the five finalists with 19% of the vote.
Baseball America, a national publication focusing on all levels of baseball from High School through the Major Leagues, held the online vote as part of their "Logo Mania" feature. Baseball America has broken Minor League Baseball logos into different categories with each issue of the magazine unveiling a different winner. Each category has five finalists chosen by the staff at Baseball America and readers are encouraged to vote at baseballamerica.com.
"Judging by the positive feedback we've received since the day we unveiled the new logos last season it proves we made a good decision," said Thunder General Manager Brad Taylor. "Baseball America named us the "Worst Logo" in baseball back when we had the "Thunderbird" logo (1994-2001) so this is definitely a little redemption."
The Thunder unveiled a new logo in August 2007 that features an animated cloud holding a lightning bolt. The new logo replaced the "Thunder God" logo that was the primary mark of the team since the 2002 season. The team used the "Thunderbird" logo from the team's inception in 1994 through the 2001 season.
"Having grown up in New Jersey, it really meant a lot to be chosen as the design company for the Thunder's new look," said Dan Simon, Owner and Creative Director of Studio Simon, the designers of the Thunder logo. "We were especially proud of the finished product and the fact that this logo won based on the opinions of the fans tells us that this identity is truly successful where it really matters."
In March 2008, CNBC.com Sports Business Columnist Darren Rovell organized a 64 team bracket style tournament with online voting to determine the "Best Logo" in all of Minor League Baseball and independent league baseball. The Thunder, a #16 seed, made it to the Sweet 16 Round.
