Young Buc Luis Oviedo to Rehab with Indians

July 4, 2021 - International League (IL)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - Today the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that right-hander Luis Oviedo will begin a rehab assignment with the Indians starting today as Indy concludes its homestand against the Iowa Cubs.

He is the fourth MLB rehabber to join Indianapolis' roster this season, following 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes and pitchers Chad Kuhl and Austin Davis.

Oviedo, 22, made his major league debut on April 3 at Chicago (NL) (1.0ip, 1k) and appeared in 12 games with Pittsburgh before being placed on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain on June 10. Primarily a middle reliever, the Venezuelan went 1-1 with a 7.23 ERA (15er/18.2ip) and 19 strikeouts. He earned his first major league win on May 14 vs. San Francisco when the Pirates came back from a 2-1 deficit in the 11th inning.

Prior to debuting with Pittsburgh to begin the 2021 campaign, Oviedo had never pitched above Single-A.

He spent all of 2019 with Single-A Lake County and went 6-6 with a 5.38 ERA (52er/87.0ip) and 72 strikeouts in 19 starts.

Oviedo was originally signed by Cleveland as a non-drafted free agent. He was selected by New York (NL) from Cleveland with the ninth overall pick in the major league phase of the 2020 Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 10, 2020 and was traded to Pittsburgh in exchange for cash that same day. Indianapolis' MLB rehab assignments are presented by Franciscan Health.
