St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - St. Paul Saints starter Chandler Shepherd was masterful for 5.0 innings on Sunday night at CHS Field. Unfortunately, the bullpen couldn't hold the lead as the Saints lost 10-6 to the Omaha Storm Chasers in front of the largest crowd of the season, 9,317.

In the first, the Saints struck first as Jose Miranda led off the inning with a walk. Drew Maggi then made Saints history becoming the first player in franchise history (Independent and Triple-A) to homer in four straight games when he clubbed a two-run homer to left, his sixth of the season, to make it 2-0 Saints.

Meanwhile, Shepherd allowed just one base runner through the first three innings, an infield two-out single by Gabriel Cancel in the first.

In the fourth the Saints added another when the first four hitters singled: Mark Contreras, Damek Tomscha, JT Riddle and Jimmy Kerrigan, the latter knocking in a run to make it 3-0. It could have been more, but with the bases loaded and nobody out, Roberto Peña hit a fly ball to medium right that was caught by Anderson Miller who then threw out Tomscha at the plate for a double play. Keon Broxton followed by sending a deep fly to left-center that Kyle Isbel leaped and robbed Broxton of a three-run homer.

Shepherd finished off his night by retiring the last five hitters he faced going 5.0 shutout innings allowing two hits while striking out three.

The big inning, however, came in the sixth when the Storm Chasers got to the Saints bullpen for a seven spot. Joe Harvey made his Saints debut and he walked Anderson Miller to lead off the inning. Angelo Castellano hit a blooper to center for a hit and Broxton's throw to third sailed over JT Riddle's head as Castellano took second on the error. Erick Mejia's sacrifice fly made it 3-1. Rudy Martin tied the game at three with a two-run homer to right, his first of the season. After a walk to Gabriel Cancel, Harvey departed for Kyle Barraclough. He walked Ryan McBroom and then gave up a three-run homer to Kyle Isbel, his sixth of the season, putting the Storm Chasers up 6-3. The very next hitter, Meibrys Viloria, his a solo homer to left, his fifth of the season increasing the Storm Chasers lead to 7-3.

The Storm Chasers made it 8-3 in seventh when Martin singled to center and McBroom brought him home with a two-out double.

The Saints mounted a comeback in the bottom of the inning as Broxton led off the inning with a solo homer to left, his third of the game, cutting the deficit to 8-4. With one out Maggi singled to left and scored on Brent Rooker's triple to right-center making it 8-5. An RBI groundout by Contreras got the Saints to within two at 8-6.

The Saints had an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the eighth. With one out Jimmy Kerrigan singled to left to finish off a 3-4 night. With two outs Broxton singled to center, moving Kerrigan to third. That brough up Jose Miranda. With Miranda at the plate a wild pitch sent Broxton to second, but on a 3-2 pitch Miranda couldn't lay off a change up, up in the zone to end the inning.

The Storm Chasers added two insurance runs in the ninth on a two-run homer by McBroom, his 16th of the season, to make it 10-6.

The Saints have Monday off before they begin a six-game series against the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday at Principal Park at 6:38 p.m. Both teams are TBA and the game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
