Iowa Cubs News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Iowa Cubs (21-30) got manager Marty Pevey his 500th win with the team, beating the Indianapolis Indians (27-26) 5-2, Sunday at Victory Field.
Adrian Sampson spun six innings allowing just two runs on seven hits, good enough to earn his fourth straight victory. The righty walked one and struck out four in his second win of the series.
He was provided some run support early, as Tony Wolters got the scoring started with a two-run blast in the second inning. Tyler Ladendorf and Dee Gordon provided three more runs in the fourth inning with a two-RBI double and an RBI single.
Indianapolis struck back in the fourth with a solo shot from Christian Bethancourt, cutting the I-Cubs' lead to four. They got another run in the fifth when Sampson walked Cole Tucker with the bases loaded, making it a 5-2 ballgame.
Tommy Nance and recently named Chicago Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month, Ben Leeper, gave Iowa two perfect innings of relief, keeping the lead at three. Manuel Rodriguez came in for the ninth and allowed one hit, but got a double play and strikeout to close out the 5-2 win, earning his first career Triple-A save.
