Norfolk Salvages Series Split in Pitchers' Duel Win

July 4, 2021 - International League (IL)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk was able to salvage a 3-3 series split with a 2-1 win over Charlotte tonight in front of a sellout crowd of 10,969, the largest crowd in Truist Field history. The Tides were limited to three hits or less for the second time in the series and for the sixth time this season. They're 2-4 in those games with their other win happening vs. Charlotte on May 30.

The only time Norfolk scored was in the top of the second inning. Tyler Nevin snuck a flyball over the right field wall to leadoff the inning for the first run. Three batters later, Seth Mejias-Brean hit his over the left-center field wall. Norfolk has hit at least one home run in seven straight games and in 21 of their last 24 games (since June 6). The Tides have 41 home runs in that span, the most in the Triple-A East Southeast Division.

Alex Wells pitched 5.0 scoreless innings in his start to earn his fifth win of the season, allowing three runs and two walks while striking out four. He retired the last four batters he faced, striking out two of them. Shawn Armstrong and Manny Barreda followed suit with two 1-2-3 innings of their own, totaling 10-straight outs.

Alex McRae threw a quality start for Charlotte, throwing six innings and only gave up the two home runs in the second inning. He gave up three hits and one walk with a season-high 10 strikeouts. McRae totaled 15 strikeouts in the series against Norfolk.

Charlotte scored their first run with two-outs in the eighth when Zach Remillard hit a solo home run. The Knights would get two more hits and get runners on second and third. That's when Dustin Knight was called in to clean up the jam and after an intentional walk to load up the bases, he struck out Matt Reynolds looking to retire the side.

Knight would go on to close out Charlotte 1-2-3 as Norfolk won the game, 2-1. It was Knights fourth save of the season and extends his scoreless innings streak to 11.1 and lowers his ERA to 1.00.

After the off-day on Monday, the Tides return to Harbor Park Tuesday to host the Durham Bulls for the start of a six-game set. RHP Dean Kremer (0-1, 5.02) is set to start for the Tides. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
