Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had the go-ahead run in scoring position with one out in the top of the ninth, but fell to the Worcester Red Sox 5-4 on Sunday night at Polar Park.

The RailRiders took the lead in the top of the second inning when Armando Alvarez hit a leadoff double against Tanner Houck. Two batters later, he scored on an Andrew Velazquez double to give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 1-0 lead.

Asher Wojciechowski (0-1) retired the first nine batters he faced in his second start of the year for the RailRiders, but was touched up for two runs in the fourth. Jarren Duran tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a Yairo Munoz double. Munoz came around to score on a Johan Mieses sacrifice fly later in the frame to give Worcester a 2-1 lead.

The WooSox scored another run in the bottom of the sixth against Trevor Lane, and tacked on two more in the eighth against Sal Romano to extend its lead to 5-1.

SWB threatened to score in the seventh and eighth innings, but stranded the bases loaded in the seventh and left another runner on in the eighth against Daniel Gossett.

In the top of the ninth the RailRiders loaded the bases with one out against Gossett (5-3), and former RailRider Kaleb Ort was summoned from the bullpen. Ryan LaMarre promptly greeted him with an RBI single, then a walk to Socrates Brito brought in another run. Another bases-loaded walk to Rob Brantly gave SWB extra tally to cut the deficit to 5-4. However, Ort struck out the next two batters to end the game.
