Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, CT – The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, have announced plans to sign veteran center Brendan Yarema to a professional tryout contract. Yarema had been with the AHL's Chicago Wolves but did not appear in any games this season because of an injury and a logjam of veterans on that team's roster.

The Sound Tigers also announced center Brett Nowak, center Derek Edwardson, center Mike Bayrack and right wing John Morlang have been released and that defenseman Vince Macri has been reassigned to the ECHL's Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies. Nowak and Edwardson returned to Atlantic City while Bayrack and Morlang returned to the United Hockey League's Danbury Trashers.

Yarema, 28, had 16 goals, 17 assists, 33 points and 151 penalty minutes in 63 AHL games with Chicago last season. The 6'1'' 210-pounder from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario split the 2002-03 season between the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and the ECHL's Charlotte Checkers. Other stops in Yarema's career include the AHL's Houston Aeros in 2001-02, the London Knights of the British Superleague in 2000-01, two seasons with the International Hockey League's Kansas City Blades from 1998 through 2000 and the AHL's Kentucky Thoroughblades in 1997-98. He split his first professional season, 1996-97, between the AHL's St. John's Maple Leafs and the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays, winning the Kelly Cup Championship with South Carolina. Yarema played three years of junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League with the Sarnia Sting, 1994-96, and Newmarket Royals, 1993-94.

The Sound Tigers will play the second and third games of a stretch of seven straight on the road when they visit the Norfolk Admirals this Friday and Saturday. Both of this weekend's games will be broadcast live on 600 WICC-AM and at www.soundtigers.com beginning at 7:15 p.m. The Sound Tigers' next home game at Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard will be Friday, January 21st when they host the Albany River Rats at 7:35 p.m.
