Penguins recall Sabourin, send Chiodo to Wheeling

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins today recalled goaltender Dany Sabourin from Wheeling (ECHL) and reassigned goaltender Andy Chiodo to the Nailers.

Sabourin, 24, has appeared in two games with the Penguins this season, posting a 1-1 record and a 1.22 goals against average. In 23 games this season with the Nailers, he has a 16-5 record with a 1.60 goals against average and five shutouts. Sabourin ranks among ECHL goaltenders in shutouts (first), wins (second), goals against average (second), minutes played (second with 1353), save percentage (fourth with a .944 save percentage) and saves (tied for fourth with 605).

He was recalled from Wheeling on November 30 and reassigned to the Nailers on December 9.

The 6'2", 182-pound native of Val-d'Or, Quebec split last season between Lowell (AHL), Calgary (NHL) and Las Vegas (ECHL). In 14 games with the Lock Monsters, he had a record of 5-7-2 and a 2.85 goals against average. In four games with the Flames, Sabourin posted a record of 0-3 with a 3.55 goals against average. He was recalled from Lowell on October 19 and made his NHL debut against the Dallas Stars on Oct. 29. Sabourin was reassigned to Las Vegas on February 26 and posted a record of 6-3-1 and a 2.35 goals against average in 10 games with the Wranglers.

In 58 career games in the AHL with Lowell, Saint John and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he has a record of 22-25-6 with a 2.66 goals against average and four shutouts.

Sabourin was selected by Calgary in the fifth round (108th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

He was signed by the Penguins to an American Hockey League contract on September 25, 2004.

Chiodo, 21, has posted a 3-6-1 record with a 3.58 goals against average and one shutout in 11 games with the Penguins this season. In two games with the Nailers this season, he has a record of 1-1 with a 1.94 goals against average and a .931 save percentage.

Chiodo was reassigned to Wheeling on November 30 and later recalled by the Penguins on December 6.

The 5'11", 194-pound native of Toronto, Ontario spent time last season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Wheeling and Pittsburgh.

In 44 games with the AHL Penguins, he posted a record of 18-19-2, with a 2.40 goals against average and four shutouts during his rookie season. Chiodo posted a 9-7 record with three shutouts and a .916 save percentage in 18 post-season games. He ranked among AHL goaltenders in shutouts (tied for first), minutes played (second with 1048), wins (third), saves (third with 412) and goals against average (eleventh) during the 2004 Calder Cup Playoffs.

In two games with the Nailers, he had a record of 0-2 with a 6.26 goals against average. Chiodo also appeared in eight games with the NHL Penguins in 2003-04, posting a 3-4-1 record with a 3.46 goals against average and a .892 save percentage.

He was selected by Pittsburgh in the seventh round (199th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

The Penguins (18-8-4-3, 43 points; 2ND -Place, East Division) will begin a stretch of four games in five days starting on Wednesday when they visit the Worcester IceCats (19-11-1-2, 4TH-Place, Atlantic Division). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. at the DCU Centre. The Penguins will then visit the Binghamton Senators on Friday (7:05 p.m. start), before returning home to host the Philadelphia Phantoms and Syracuse Crunch on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Approximately 30 tickets are still available for Saturday's game against the Phantoms (7:05 p.m. start) and about 571 tickets are still available for Sunday's game against the Crunch (5:05 p.m. start).
