Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC -- Starting left-handed pitcher Chase Wright fanned eight batters in 6.1 innings and shortstop Marcos Vechionacci drove home two runs without recording a hit as the Charleston RiverDogs seared the Columbus Catfish, 4-3, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
While improving his record to 3-1, Wright allowed three hits, three runs and walked four as the RiverDogs regained sole possession of first place in the Southern Division as Augusta fell at Rome, 2-1. Charleston ups its record to 25-15 while the Catfish slip to 13-27. The RiverDogs are 5-0 at home against Columbus this season, with four of the five wins coming by only one run.
The top of the batting order led the way for Charleston, as center fielder Tim Battle scored three times and second baseman Justin Christian had three of the RiverDogs' six hits. The two combined to reach base in seven of their eight combined plate appearances.
The RiverDogs' pitching staff limited Columbus to only five hits as Josh Smith, who relieved Wright in the seventh inning, allowed only two hits and fanned two. Mike Martinez, who continues to lead the SAL in saves, picked up his 14th on the season in 14 attempts as he pitched a perfect ninth frame.
Charleston scored twice in the first on sacrifice flies by Vechionacci and Cody Ehlers, and added a single tally in the third when Vechionacci reached on a field's choice and drove home Battle, who walked. The hosts added another run in the fifth when Battle, who again drew a base on balls, scored when Columbus pitcher Javy Guerra threw wildly in a pickoff attempt at first base.
Columbus scored a run in the second on second baseman Travis Denker's solo home run to right field and added two more on a two-run homer in the seventh by catcher Juan Apodaca.
Guerra suffered the loss for the Catfish, dropping his record to 2-3, as he went six full innings, walked three and struck out four.
Game Three of the four-game set is scheduled for Thursday night after The Citadel - Georgia Southern game that begins at 5 p.m. Eric Hacker (0-1) toes the rubber for Charleston while Blake Johnson (2-1) gets the call for the Catfish.
