
Grasshoppers announce scholarship recipients

(GREENSBORO, NC) The Greensboro Grasshoppers are pleased announce John Gann of Eastern Guilford High School, Jason Rook of Western Guilford High School, and Jacob Kensmoe of Lucy Ragsdale High School have each been chosen as the 2005 recipients of the Charlie Harville Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is worth $1,000 to the four-year college or university of the student's choice. It is based on athletic ability in the sport of baseball or softball, academic achievement and community service.
The first recipient, John Gann, will attend NC State in the fall of 2005 and major in electrical engineering. He ranks 5th in a class of 190 and has a GPA of 4.50. Gann's baseball experience includes the 2004 All Conference team, Second Team All Area, and runner-up for the Conference Player of the Year. He is also a member of Student Council and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Jason Rook will attend Appalachian State in the fall of 2005. He plans to play baseball and major in sports medicine. He was a member of the 2004 All State and All Conference Baseball Team and was named the 2004 North State Player of the Year. Rook was given the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award and the Most Valuable Player Award by Western Guilford High School.
The final recipient, Jacob Kensmoe, plans to attend NC State in the fall of 2005. He is ranked second in a class of 282 with a GPA of 5.074. Kensmoe was a member of the 2004 All Tri-County Conference team and the 2004 and 2005 Easter Tournament All-Tournament Team. He was recently named the 2005 Easter Tournament MVP. In 2004, he was the Junior Marshall and was selected to attend the Governor's School of NC in Math.
The scholarship awarded is in memory of Charlie Harville, a long time sports journalist and sports legend in Greensboro, who passed away in the winter of 2002. Charlie loved baseball and was a great friend of the Grasshoppers organization.
The scholarships will be awarded to these deserving student athletes during a pre-game ceremony on Thursday, May 26, 2005. The ceremony will commence at 6:40PM.
The game against the Rome Braves will begin at 7:00PM and gates will open at 6:00PM.
