One-Run Games Continue to Plague Catfish After 4-3 Loss to Charleston

CHARLESTON, SC— The Charleston RiverDogs beat the Catfish 4-3 tonight at Riley Park in Charleston, SC, handing Columbus their 27th loss of the season in the 40th game of the South Atlantic League's season. The Catfish are now 13-27 overall, 4-17 on the road and have lost 12 one-run games away from home after tonight's 4-3 defeat. LHP Chase Smith struck out eight Catfish batters in the win for Charleston. He gave up homers to Columbus 2B Travis Denker and C Juan Apodaca, but the Fish came up one-run short for the second straight night.

RHP Javy Guerra started for Columbus and gave up two runs (one earned) in the first inning on a pair of RiverDog sacrifice flies. In the second, Denker's solo blast barely cleared the right-field wall to give the Catfish their first hit and first run, trailing 2-1. The homer broke a 0-16 slump for Denker and was his first HR since April 24th. He co-leads the team in HR with 6. Guerra gave up runs in the third and fifth as the Catfish trailed tonight 4-1 heading into the seventh.

In the top of the seventh frame RF James Peterson drew a walk and came home on Apodaca's deep blast over the left-center field wall. The Catfish had the tying run on base in the seventh and the eighth but couldn't produce against Charleston relief pitcher Josh Smith, and RiverDog RHP Mike Martinez earned his league-leading 14th save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The Catfish are now 1-5 on the roadtrip after the loss tonight. Tomorrow night at 8:05 the Catfish will face the RiverDogs with RHP Blake Johnson (2-1, 3.82 ERA) on the hil for Columbus Johnson has allowed just one run in his last three starts, a span of 18.2 IP. All of the Catfish games this week on the road can be heard live on WDAK 540 AM in Columbus.
