Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
Phoenix, AZ - The Las Vegas Wranglers (37-12-14, 88 points) defeated the Phoenix RoadRunners (25-34-5, 55 points) 5-3 at the U.S. Airways Center on Saturday night. Winger Arpad Mihaly scored his 24th goal of the season with 2:46 remaining in the game, capping off a late third-period rally for Las Vegas. Bakersfield lost to Stockton at home 4-1, allowing the Wranglers to tie the Condors for the Pacific Division lead. Defensemen Mike McBain and Jason Jozsa, as well as forwards Nick Anderson and Joe Tallari each scored in the victory. Las Vegas goalie Mike McKenna made 19 saves for his 20th win of the season. Phoenix goalie Cody Rudkowsky made 32 saves as the RoadRunners lost their sixth straight game. Forwards Steve Crampton and Adam Cracknell each dished out two assists a piece for Las Vegas. Las Vegas will play in Long Beach on Sunday at 5:00 pm.
In the first period, Las Vegas jumped out to a 1-0 lead with the first goal of the evening. The Wranglers capitalized on the first power play of the night as Joe Tallari knocked home a rebound for his 12th goal of the season at 9:21. Tallari put in a rebound off an Arpa Mihaly shot. Phoenix countered off a defensive lapse by Las Vegas. After the RoadRunners dumped a puck in, Liam Lindstrom beat the Wranglers to the puck and centered for a wide-open Jeff Kyrzakos, who rifled a one-timer past Mike McKenna at 13:41, tying the game at one goal a side. Las Vegas outshot Phoenix 18-4 in the first period.
In the second period, Phoenix struck just 1:08 into the middle period as Olivier Latendresse scored off a rebound for his 10th goal of the season and a 2-1 Phoenix lead.
In the third period, Phoenix jumped out to a 3-1 lead when Justin Aikins poked in a rebound just 2:45 into the final period, expanding the RoadRunners lead to 3-1. Las Vegas rallied late starting with a shorthanded goal by Mike McBain at 8:41. The captain's second goal of the season snapped a 39-game goalless drought and cut the Phoenix lead to 3-2. Las Vegas tied the game at three as Jason Jozsa scored his ninth goal of the season at 13:17. Minutes later, Arpad Mihaly stickhandled through traffic and backhanded the puck into the Phoenix net for his 24th goal of the season with only 2:46 remaining in the game. Mihaly has now scored a goal in four straight games. Nick Anderson added an empty-net goal with 14-seconds remaining in the game for the 5-3 final.
Las Vegas will play in Long Beach on Sunday and in Bakersfield next Friday before returning home on Tuesday, March 27th at 7:05 pm against the Bakersfield Condors.
