Fresno Falcons News Release
Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Falcons dropped the opening game of their four-game home stand on Friday night, falling to the Alaska Aces 3-1 in front of 4,945 fans at Save Mart Center. Despite the loss, the Falcons remain three points behind the fourth-place Idaho Steelheads, who lost in Stockton 3-2.
Alaska had a chance to take an early lead as Vladimir Novak was awarded a penalty shot 6:02 into the contest. Novak tried to deke goaltender Ryan MacDonald, but the Falcons' goaltender came up with a blocker-pad save to keep the game scoreless.
The Falcons broke through with a power-play goal at 9:04. P.O. Beaulieu took a pass in the high slot, and beat Derek Gustafson with a wrist shot for his third goal of the season. The goal was Fresno's first power-play goal in 35 opportunities against Alaska this season.
The Aces pulled even 12:08 into the second period. MacDonald made the initial save on Peter Metcalf's shot, but Matt Robinson pushed the rebound home on the far post tying the score at one through 40 minutes.
Robinson scored his second goal of the night 2:34 into the third period giving Alaska a 2-1 lead.
Fresno applied pressure for much of the third period, outshooting Alaska 14-7 in the final 20 minutes of play, but was unable to get the tying goal past Gustafson, who finished the night with 35 saves.
Mike Scott set the final, scoring an empty-net goal with 17.5 seconds left in the third period.
The Falcons' four-game home stand continues on Saturday as they host the Idaho Steelheads at 7:30 p.m. for a St. Patrick's Day celebration. The first 2,000 fans in attendance receive a St. Patrick's Day puck courtesy of Supercuts and 95.7 The Fox. Falcon players will be wearing green jerseys, presented by Madtown Auto Stereo and Accessories and CBS 47, which will be auctioned off after the game with all proceeds benefiting the Fresno Police Chief's Foundation.
Tickets for all Falcons home games can be purchased at the Save Mart Center Box Office, by phone at (559) 485-8497, on-line at www.ticketmaster.com, or at any TicketMaster outlet. All Falcons' games air on 1550 and 96.1 Sporting News Radio starting with the Port of Subs Pre-Game Show 15 minutes prior to face off.
