Ice Pilots lose thriller at the hanger

March 17, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Pensacola Ice Pilots News Release

The Pensacola Ice Pilots held on through overtime, but dropped a 4-3 decision to the South Carolina Stingrays in a shootout tonight at the Hangar.

The Ice Pilots came out strong with a power play goal by David Wrigley from Rob Rankin and John Hecimovic, and held the Stingrays at 1-0 through the end of the first period.

Midway through the second period, Wrigley netted another one, bringing the score to 2-0 at 12:56. The Stingrays answered back with a goal of their own, making it 2-1. Dan Sullivan scored at 19:05 of the second, making the score 3-1, but the Stingrays put one past goaltender Evan Lindsay 0:14 seconds later.

The Ice Pilots fought hard to hang onto their lead through the third period. With the score standing at 3-2, and even with some fantastic teamwork, the Ice Pilots were unable to stop the Stingrays from scoring one more time to tie the game 3-3.

Neither team was able to score during the 5:00 overtime, so the game went to a shootout. Matt W. Reid and Peter Szabo of the Stingrays were unable to score, but both Jarrett Konkle and Evan Schwabe netted goals during the shootout. Wrigley, Hecimovic, Erik Johnson, and Sergei Ogorodnikov were unable to get past the defenses of Stingrays goaltender Daren Machesney, so the Stingrays won the decision 4-3.

Both teams were awarded a point for the tied game at the end of overtime, bringing the Ice Pilots record to 19-39-1-3 for 42 points. The Stingrays improved their record to 33-23-3-4 and 73 points overall. Evan Lindsay was outstanding in goal, stopping 47 of 50 shots during regulation for the second night in a row, and was named the #1 Star of the Game.
