Fresno Falcons News Release
Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Falcons fell to the Idaho Steelheads 5-2 on Saturday night in front of 7,853 fans at Save Mart Center. Fresno now trails Idaho by five points for fourth-place in the National Conference playoff standings.
Idaho opened the scoring 3:35 into the opening period as B.J. Crombeen gathered in a loose puck just inside the crease, and swept a shot beyond the reach of Scott Stirling for his third goal in as many games.
The Falcons pulled even late in the period at 16:27. Dave Borrelli sent a pass in front, and John Morlang tipped it past goaltender John Daigneau tying the score at one through 20 minutes of play.
Fresno took the lead 6:55 into the second period, scoring its league-leading 21st shorthanded goal of the season. Jason Tejchma forced a steal at his own blue line, and skated in alone on Daigneau, beating him with a shot off of the backhand for his first professional goal.
The Steelheads tied the score at two at 11:19. Derek Nesbitt took a pass from Marty Flichel in the slot, and beat Stirling with a wrist shot high to the glove side.
Idaho retook the lead at 15:58, just one second after a power-play opportunity expired. Steve Chabbert took a shot from the right point, that was deflected in front by Flichel, giving the Steelheads a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
Flichel scored his second of the night 9:36 into the third period, beating Stirling with a wrist shot from the left-wing circle, extending Idaho's lead to 4-2.
Idaho's Tuomas Mikkonen gave the Steelheads a 5-2 lead at 16:41, scoring on a wrist shot from the hash marks.
The Steelheads finished the night with a 45-17 advantage in shots on goal, while the Falcons were scoreless on four power-play opportunities.
The Falcons' four-game home stand continues on Sunday as they host the Alaska Aces at 5:00 p.m. on Kids' Day, presented by Pump It Up, Comcast Cable, and Soft Rock 98.9. All kids' tickets are half price for the game, which also features the annual Mascot Broomball Game, presented by GW School Supply.
