Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
Las Vegas, Nev- The Las Vegas Wranglers fell to the Ontario Reign Thursday night at the Orleans Arena. Kevin Schaeffer and Colin Long tallied the two goals for the Wranglers in their final regular season meeting with the Reign. Aaron Lewadniuk, Kyle Kraemer, Shawn Germain, and Justin Taylor all netted for Ontario. Jase Weslosky earned his second win in a Reign jersey in only his second start for the club turning away 27 of the 29 shots he faced. Michael Ouzas turned away 32 of the 35 shots he faced as he slides to 17-13-2 on the season. Neither team was able to capitalize on their power play opportunities as Las Vegas had three and Ontario had six. With the win Ontario keeps their playoff hopes alive as they now ride a two-game winning streak and improve their record to 24-35-6 with 52 total points. The loss sends the Wranglers on three-game losing streak as the slide to 35-22-5 but still hold the top spot in the Pacific division with 75 total points.
Las Vegas tallied the first goal of Thursday night's battle but the Reign would not give up as they still fight for the final playoff spot in the Western conference. Kevin Schaffer scored his third goal of the season assisted by Craig Switzer and Geoff Paukovich at the 12:48 mark of the first period to give the Wranglers the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Wranglers tallied the lone goal of the first period but the Reign would answer back in the second period with three goals of their own. Aaron Lewadniuk tied the game with his fifteenth goal of the season at the 1:20 mark of the second period with no help from his teammates. Kyle Kraemer made it 2-1 for Ontario at the 2:41 mark of the second period with his fourteenth goal of the season assisted by Justin Taylor. The Reign made it 3-1 with Shawn Germain's third goal of the season assisted by Aaron Lewadniuk and Brett O'Malley at the 9:04 mark of the second period. Colin Long made it 3-2 at 18:03 of the second period with his twelfth goal of the season assisted by Ryan Huddy and Craig Switzer.
The third period saw Ontario squander multiple power play opportunities including multiple two-mad advantages which left the door open for Las Vegas. Michael Ouzas headed to the bench for the extra skater with more than a minute left in the game while the Wranglers were on power play but Las Vegas could not convert past Jase Weslosky. Ontario added an empty-net goal just as they came off that penalty kill. Justin Taylor exited the box, picked up the loose puck and buried it into the open net at the 19:16 mark of the third period assisted by Jordan Morrison and Brett O'Malley giving Ontario the 4-2 win.
The Wranglers now play host to the Alaska Aces for a three-game set beginning tomorrow night at 7:05 PM.
