Victoria, BC â The Las Vegas Wranglers (21-25-5, 47 points) defeated the Victoria Salmon Kings (10-38-5, 25 points) 4-3 at the Bear Mountain Arena on Friday night. Winger Shawn Limpright scored the game-winning goal with 32 seconds remaining, and added an assist, as Las Vegas snapped a seven-game winless streak. Las Vegas forwards Jeff Attard and Dustin Johner, along with defenseman Deryk Engelland each had two assists in the Wranglers first win since January 31st. Forwards Matt Schmidt and Darren Lynch also scored as Las Vegas improved to 5-0-0 against Victoria. The Wranglers will stay in Victoria for the second of the three-game series with the Salmon Kings at 7:00 pm on Saturday night.
The Wranglers scored the first goal of the night when Darren Lynch poked in a rebound just 1:28 into the game, giving Las Vegas the early 1-0 lead. Lynch got the rebound off a Dustin Johner shot, and scored his third goal of the season, beating Victoria goalie Dan Blackburn. Victoria countered almost immediately when Derek Campbell scored on a rebound at 2:02. Campbell picked up a rebound in front of the Las Vegas net off a David Neale shot, and fired the puck past Marc Magliarditi for the tying goal.
In the second, Victoria snagged a 2-1 lead when Mike Ikeda scored his first goal as a Salmon King just 2:09 into the second period. Ryan Watson set up the goal with a pass from the left wing to the front of the net, where Ikeda redirected it in. Las Vegas answered with the tying goal 10 minutes later when Matt Schmidt scored his second goal of the season in his Wranglers debut. Center Jeff Attard set up Schmidt for the 2-on-1 equalizer at 12:21. Victoria would reclaim the lead before the second period expired as Jason Hegberg redirected a Mike Josephson centering-pass from the right wing. Hegberg's ninth of the season came at 15:02 and gave the Salmon Kings a 3-2 lead heading into the final period.
In the third, Las Vegas roared back out shooting Victoria 21-12 in the final period. Defenseman Mike McBain fired in his first goal of the season, beating Blackburn five-hole at 6:26 to tie the game at three. With 32 second remaining in the game, Shawn Limpright found a loose puck in the slot and buried it into the net for the game-winning goal at 19:32.
The Wranglers are in the midst of an eight-game road trip ending Saturday, March 5th in Idaho. The Wranglers return home on Friday, March 11th and Saturday, March 12th when they host the San Diego Gulls at 7:05 pm. Friday night, the first 1,500 fans receive a Wranglers visor sponsored by Fox 5. On Saturday night, "Zooperstars" will perform at the game. Prior to the game on the 12th, Port of Subs will host the "Port of Subs" pre-game party in the parking lot of the Orleans Arena from 4:00-6:00 pm.
Las Vegas will return home to the Orleans Arena on Saturday, January 29th at 7:05 pm as they host the Victoria Salmon Kings. The first 1,500 fans through the gate will get a Wranglers' hockey puck compliments of Soma Financial.
