Louisiana IceGators News Release
Lafayette, LA - Playing against the Columbia Inferno for the 2nd time this week, the Louisiana IceGators lost in a shoot out by a score of 2-1. Rob McVicar, the Inferno goalie, stopped 30 of 31 shots in 65 minutes and stoned all 5 Gators in the shootout.
The Gators jumped out to a 1-0 at the 5:54 mark, courtesy of a goal by rookie Roger Leonard. With Louisiana on a line change, Jade Galbraith took a snap shot from the right circle. Rob McVicar made the save but left the rebound 10 feet out in the slot. Leonard jumping off the bench at the time of the shot, barreled toward the net and backhanded the rebound home for his 6th of the season, the other assist going to Shawn Skiehar. Neither team would score during the rest of the period as the Gators took the one goal lead to the locker room after 20 minutes of play.
The Inferno used the power play to tie the game at 1-1 through 40 minutes. At 19:34 of the 2nd, Derek Eastman's slapshot from the blue line bounced of a prone Gators defenseman in front of the net and skipped past Kyle Kettles for the tie. It was Eastman's 3rd of the year, assists going to Brad Ralph and Matt Ulwelling. Columbia getting the tying goal on their 6th power play in the first two periods.
Neither team could score in the 3rd period or overtime despite a Louisiana power play in the extra frame. In the shootout, John Longo of the Inferno scored in round one and that would be the game winner.Kettles would stop the next four Inferno offerings but would lose as McVicar denied all five Louisiana shooters to capture two points for Columbia.
