Gladiators fall to Lynx, 5-2

Augusta used three third period goals and 21 saves from Jason Saal to get past the Gwinnett Gladiators 5-2 on Saturday night at the Augusta Richmond County Civic Center. Joe Markusen got the Lynx on the board first beating Gladiators netminder Adam Berkhoel with a slapshot from the left point 5:32 into the first period. Jamie Johnson picked up an assist on the goal pushing the puck back to Markusen at the point. Colt King also picked up a helper on the goal for Augusta.

Augusta pushed their lead to 2-0 later in the first period. Johnson took a centering pass from Eric Johansson and ripped a snap shot past a sprawling Berkhoel for Augusta's second goal of the night. Matt Dzieduszycki also picked up an assist on the goal at 14:55 of the opening period.

Jeff Campbell pushed his team lead in goals scored to 23 punching home the Gladiators first goal of the game. Jim Jackson got the play going in his own end getting crunched behind the Gladiators net but not before he was able to move the puck up the wing to Randy Dagenais. Gwinnett came in on a 4-on-2 break where Dagenais fed the trailer Campbell in the high slot to set up the goal 3:32 into the second period.

Gwinnett tied the game up at 2-2 on Andrew Oke's 4th goal of the season. The defenseman pinched in from the point and was able to pick up a rebound and ripped a slapshot past Augusta netminder Jason Saal. Paul Flache added an assist on the goal at 11:03 of the middle stanza.

Augusta took the only lead they would need in the contest with a power play goal off the stick of Johnson. Johnson set up on the power play along the right wing circle ripped a snapshot off three posts and past Berkhoel off a feed from Colt King at 8:52 of the final period.

Dzieduszycki also had a helper on the play. Dan Sullivan gave the Lynx a 4-2 lead tapping a centering pass from Doug Wright past Berhkoel at 14:49 of the third period. Markusen also picked up an assist on the tally.

John Cronin put the game out of reach as he walked into the slot untouched and ripped a slapshot past Berkhoel in the slot. Brian Passmore and Sullivan picked up assists on the goal for the Lynx at 15:25 of the third period.

Gwinnett falls to 26-17-7 on the season in the loss while Adam Berkhoel made 20 saves in the loss for the Gladiators as Gwinnett gave up its first goal on the penalty kill in the past 7 games in the loss.

The Gladiators host the South Carolina Stingrays on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Sunday.
