Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz News Release
GREENVILLE, SC â The Greenville Grrrowl scored three unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Pee Dee Pride 3-2 on Saturday night at the BI-LO Center.
The loss was the Pride's third straight overall, and their 10th consecutive on the road.
The Pride got a close call with 8:53 remaining in the first period. To that point, Pee Dee was outshooting Greenville 7-0 and controlling the tempo of the game. Ed Caron streaked down the left wing side and deked Nick Boucher to the ice. Boucher poke-checked the puck off of Caron's stick, and the puck rolled underneath the Pride goaltender, and settled right on the goal line. The Grrrowl pushed the puck across the line, but it was after referee Nygel Pelletier had blown the whistle, waiving off the goal.
The first period ended scoreless, with the Pride outshooting the Grrrowl by an 11-5 margin.
It looked like the game would go to the third period scoreless, but the Pride changed that quickly, scoring two late goals in the second period.
Pee Dee scored the game's first goal at the 17:27 mark of the second period, ending an 0-for-27 drought on the power play. Gregg Johnson made a nice play to keep the puck in at the blue line, and he found Steve Cygan skating down the right-wing side. Cygan made a nifty move at the top of the crease, and beat Greenville goaltender Jeff Deslauriers with a quick shot to the near post for his third goal in a Pride sweater, and his eighth overall this season.
Just 52 seconds later, the Pride made it 2-0. Tyler Kindle gathered in a loose puck at the Grrrowl blue line, and dropped a pass for Johnson trailing the play. Johnson uncorked a slap shot from the high slot that beat Deslauriers to the glove side for his 13th goal of the season.
Greenville made it a one-goal game at the 4:21 mark of the third period. Ed Caron's shot went wide of the net and deflected off of the end boards to the near post. Boucher tried to cover the puck, but before he could get his glove on the biscuit, Kevin Bergin gathered it in and roofed a shot over the Pride goaltender for his 13th tally of the season.
The Grrrowl tied the game at the 12:26 mark of the third period. Simon Ferguson centered a pass to Vladimir Gusev at the hash marks, and the former Pride defensemen beat Boucher to the five hole for his sixth goal of the season.
Greenville took its first lead of the night at 15:24. Radunske gathered in a pass from Fegruson, and raced down the left-wing side, beating Boucher with a quick wrist shot for his 12th goal of the year.
The Pride conclude their three-game weekend on Sunday, hosting the Charlotte Checkers in a 2:30 p.m. matinee. It's another Sunday Kids' Day at the Lion 's Den, with 200 and 400 level seats just $2.50 for kids 12 and under. In addition, kids' meals (hot dog, potato chips, and small soda) are available for an additional $2.50.
