Aces drop 2-1 shootout to Fresno
February 26, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Fresno goaltender Brett Jaeger stopped 49 shots and the Falcons scored in their final two attempts of the shootout in a 2-1 victory over Alaska before 4,488 fans Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena.
Playing on their home ice just 13 hours after landing at the Anchorage airport following a 4-0-1 road trip, the Aces quickly fell behind, as Jan Sochor fed John Wroblewski in the slot for a quick 1-0 Falcons lead at 2:20 of the opening period. Alaska started to find its game legs and gradually took over the game, out-shooting Fresno 14-12 in the first period, 11-5 in the second, and 21-4 in the third. But only Charles Linglet solved Jaeger, beating the rookie netminder with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle in the final minute of the second period for his 21st of the year on an Aces power play.
Alaska had lost a pair of 2-1 games (one in a shootout) to Fresno in mid-January despite a 61-42 edge in shots on goal, and even with a +27 advantage in this game, failed to beat Jaeger the rest of the way, leading to another shootout. Aces goalie Peter Aubry, who had stopped 22 of 23 shots in regulation and overtime, turned aside three of the first four Falcon attempts, and when Olivier Filion and Mike Scott scored in the third and fourth rounds, Aubry needed to make just one more save. But Charles Simard kept Fresno alive in the fifth round and Jim Lorentz scored the game-winner in the sixth, while B.J. Young and Scott Gomez came up empty for Alaska (33-15-6).
The Aces will remain in second place in the West Division (currently one point behind Long Beach) regardless of the outcome of tonight's other key match-ups, as the first-place Ice Dogs play host to Idaho and San Diego travels to third-place Bakersfield. Alaska and fourth-place Fresno (30-17-6) face one another for the final time during the regular season at Sullivan Arena tomorrow at 5:05 p.m., with another KeyBank "Sunday Skate with the Aces" scheduled immediately afterwards. Live coverage of all Alaska games on KFQD begin 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off and also can be heard by logging onto www.alaskaaces.com.
