March 17, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Houston Aeros News Release
Worcester, MA â Mike Glumac tallied a goal and two assists in a five-score second period and Curtis Sanford finished with 36 saves, as the Worcester IceCats shook off a slow start for a 5-2 victory over the Houston Aeros at Centrum Centre. Scott Pellerin and Terry Virtue each had a goal and an assist in the stanza and Trevor Byrne and Blake Evans also scored for Worcester, which has won two straight after a three-game winless streak (0-2-0-1). Johan Holmqvist made 13 saves over 40 minutes and Jeff Hoggan and Kyle Wanvig scored for the Aeros, who fell to 5-2-1-1 in their last nine. Mark Cullen posted two assists, raising another $100 for Sunshine Kids and pushing the total raised to $450. The line of Hoggan, Wanvig and Cullen combined for all six of Houston's scoring points.
Houston had its three-game road unbeaten streak (1-0-1-1) snapped and fell to 2-12-5-1 in its last 20 road games. The fourth-place Aeros are six points up on San Antonio and Cincinnati, which is underway against Chicago, and are in Norfolk Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
The Aeros dominated the first period, outshooting the IceCats 15-2. Worcester entered the game fifth in the AHL in shots allowed per game (26.78) and found itself on the short end of a 1-0 score.
The Aeros went on top with just 36 seconds left in the first, as Hoggan took a feed from Wanvig and deposited it past Sanford for his 15th goal of the season. Wanvig got the puck from Cullen, who had stolen it on the forecheck.
Houston now hasn't yielded a first-period goal in its last eight games, and the Aeros have also scored first in eight straight games.
The IceCats responded, scoring as many goals â two â in the opening five minutes of the second as they had shots in the entire first period. Worcester scored five times total in the frame to take complete control.
Worcester wasted little time tying the game, scoring 2:04 into the stanza. Aaron MacKenzie fired a shot that Holmqvist turned away, and the rebound came around the boards. The puck came to Pellerin just inside the point, and he floated one in over Holmqvist for his ninth of the season. Glumac also picked up an assist, extending his point streak to seven games, and he has a point in 11 of the last 12 games.
The IceCats then went on top at the 4:58 mark, with Marc Cavosie in the box for hooking. Glumac rebounded a Johnny Pohl shot and slid it by Holmqvist for his second of the game and 24th of the season. The tally was Glumac's fifth in the last seven games and eighth in 11 contests, and it was also his fourth power play tally in the last six games.
Worcester tallied a third goal with 4:47 left in the second. Holmqvist made a pad save on Peter Sejna, but Byrne put the rebound by Holmqvist for his sixth in the season.
The IceCats got a two-man advantage late in the second with penalties to Ben Storey and Jason Beckett, and they scored on both advantages. Jame Pollack won the draw back to Glumac, whose one-timer banged off Evans top shelf over Holmqvist with 3:11 left.
With Worcester still on the power play, Virtue scored with 1:35 remaining in the second, banking one in off Holmqvist â his teammate for two seasons in Hartford â into the net for his sixth of season.
The five goals allowed by the Aeros were the most in one period in the past two seasons.
The IceCats outshot Houston 16-11 in the second period after the feeble opening stanza.
Houston had a 5-on-3 midway through the third but didn't score.
The Aeros were able to draw within 5-2 on Wanvig's team-best 22nd of the season with 6:56 left. Cullen and Hoggan each assisted on the play.
Houston went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Worcester finished 3-for-6 with the man advantage. The IceCats have killed off their last 24 shorthanded chances.
