Down East Wood Ducks News Release

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Down East Wood Ducks scored twice in the eighth inning, and three times in the ninth, to come back and beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, 7-4, and take a 2-0 series advantage, Tuesday.

The Wood Ducks (18-8) have now won seven games in comeback fashion, including three of their five wins against the Pelicans (7-19) this season.

Myrtle Beach led 4-2 entering the eighth inning. In the top of the frame, the Woodies worked three consecutive walks to load the bases, and then Tyreque Reed reached on an infield single that deflected off of the pitcher Luis Lugo. Tyler Peyton (loss, 0-1) then took over, and with the bases still loaded, fired a pitch that deflected off the glove of Miguel Amaya for a passed ball, tying the game at four.

In the home eighth, the Pelicans got the go-ahead run on base with a one out walk to Grant Fennell, issued by Josh Advocate. He was then replaced by Demarcus Evans (win, 2-0) who got Aramis Ademan to fly out to right, but on the play D.J. Wilson, who was pinch-running, tripped over the second base bag, and got doubled off by Leody Taveras, who picked up two outfield assists in the ballgame.

The comedy of errors continued for the Pelicans in the home ninth. With one out Anderson Tejeda popped up a ball, a mile high, on the left side of the infield, which drifted on both Pelicans infielders and fell in, untouched, and Tejeda, seeing no one covering third, never stopped running, reaching with an infield triple. One batter later Ryan Dorow singled past a drawn in infield to give the Woodies the 5-4 lead. It was his third ninth inning go-ahead hit this season. One batter later, Diosbel Arias bounced a ball well behind the third base bag, which Yeiler Peguero airmailed down the right field line, allowing Dorow to score, and Arias to made it all the way to third. Arias would then score one batter later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Julio Pablo Martinez, making it 7-3.

Evans returned for the ninth, striking out the side to earn his second win of the season.

Jake Latz made the start for the Woodies, going four innings, allowing two runs on three hits, he walked three, and struck out five. Pelicans starter Oscar De La Cruz also worked four innings, giving up two runs (one earned), on three hits, he walked four, and struck out six. The biggest hit of the game for Myrtle Beach was a go-ahead solo home run from Jimmy Herron in the fifth, to go ahead 3-2.

The teams are set to play game three of their four game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Righty A.J. Alexy (0-3, 4.15) will make the start for the Woodies, opposed by Pelicans right-hander Erling Moreno (1-3, 11.20). The broadcast will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
