Herron Homers, Birds Can't Hold Two-Run Lead Late against Wood Ducks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans led 4-2 in the eighth inning, but the Wood Ducks scored five unanswered runs late to win 7-4 on Tuesday from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

For the first time since April 21, Myrtle Beach drew first blood when they scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. Yeiler Peguero led the inning off with a double and with two outs in the frame, Tyler Payne drove him in to give the Birds a 1-0 lead.

Down East tied the game at one in the top of the second inning when Julio Pablo Martinez scored on a bases loaded walk from Oscar De La Cruz.

The Woodies took the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Yonny Hernandez that made it 2-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Myrtle Beach evened the game at two when Grant Fennell singled to bring home Miguel Amaya.

Jimmy Herron vaulted the Birds in front in the fifth as he launched a solo homer to put the Birds up 3-2.

The Birds added another run to their lead to make it 4-2 in the seventh when Jhonny Bethencourt scored on a groundout from Amaya.

Luis Lugo cruised through his first three inning of relief work, but ran into trouble in the eighth inning. He walked the bases loaded and allowed an infield single to Tyreque Reed that plated a run and made it 4-3.

Tyler Peyton (0-1) then came on to replace Lugo and allowed the tying run to come home to score on a passed ball before escaping the inning with the game tied at four.

After a quiet bottom of the eighth, Down East exploded for three runs in the ninth.

Anderson Tejeda tripled with one out in the frame and scored on a single from Ryan Dorow to give Down East the 5-4 lead.

Dorow scored one batter later on an infield single and a throwing error to extend the Woodies lead to 6-4.

Down East added one more run in the inning to make it 7-4 when Diosbel Arias came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Martinez.

Demarcus Evans (2-0) struck out the side in the ninth inning to secure the Woodies win in the second game of the series.

Game three of the series between the Pelicans and the Woodies will take place on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Erling Moreno (1-3, 11.20) will toe the rubber for Myrtle Beach against A.J. Alexy (0-3, 4.15) for the Wood Ducks.
