Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Lynchburg, Va. - Sam Huff lifted a first inning home run to give the Wood Ducks the early lead, and Down East never looked back, adding on throughout the night to take the series opener, 7-0.
Down East (5-3, 55-23) has now won 11 games in shutout fashion, and came through with five two-out RBIs on the night.
Huff's first inning home runs was his sixth for the Wood Ducks this year, and 21st overall on the season. Down East also added a run in the second against Hector Hernandez (loss, 0-1). Curtis Terry reached on an infield single and then Julio Pablo Martinez dribbled a swinging bunt down the third base line. Hernandez fielded and threw wide to first to push a pair of runners into scoring position. Yanio Perez then bounced an RBI groundout to score Terry and put the Woodies on top 2-0.
Hernandez worked four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits, he walked one, and struck out two.
Sal Mendez (win, 5-0) was solid for the Woodies in his seventh start. He fired five scoreless innings, allowing just five hit and two walks, while striking out four.
Down East added on in the fifth inning. Diosbel Arias singled with one out, and after advancing to second on a groundout, came into score on a Yohel Pozo RBI single. After Pozo stole second, Terry followed with a single to left to drive him in, and then Martinez doubled down the left field line to plate a third run in the inning, and make it 5-0.
The Woodies tacked on two more in the eighth inning when Franklin Rollin ripped a two-out double to right-center to score Martinez and Perez and make it a 7-0 lead.
Jairo Beras worked three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, and Scott Engler delivered a scoreless ninth.
The series continues on Friday when the Wood Ducks send righty Josh Advocate (3-2, 3.15) to the mound to face off with Hillcats righty Cody Morris (1-0, 6.75). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and the pregame show will begin at 6:20 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online at 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio App.
