Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Frederick, MD - Three hits and a run scored from Cristian Perez was not enough for the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Thursday, as they dropped the opener of their four-game series with the Frederick Keys, 4-1. A three-run seventh by Frederick put the Keys ahead to stay as the Rocks lost their second straight and for the third time in their last four games.
Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the second thanks to the combination of Perez and Sebastian Rivero. Perez started the frame with an infield single and then circled around to score one out later courtesy of Rivero's double to left. That was all the Rocks offense could muster, however, as Frederick starter Cameron Bishop fanned eight and walked none over six innings to get the win.
Daniel Tillo matched him pitch for pitch. The Blue Crew lefty posted five straight goose eggs to start the game before allowing an unearned run in his sixth and final inning of the night. Robbie Thorburn laid down a bunt single that Tillow threw away, allowing Thorburn to sneak into scoring position. He would score on J.C. Escarra's subsequent infield single.
The Keys used power to beat the Wilmington bullpen. Walker Sheller, who just rejoined the roster on Thursday morning, entered in the seventh and yielded three runs. A leadoff walk set the stage for Daniel Fajardo's two-run homer to left-center. Frederick would get an insurance run when Thorburn worked a walk, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by Rivero and came home on a Sheller wild pitch.
Tim Naughton worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save as a Key.
The Rocks continue their four-game series in Frederick on Friday. Jonathan Bowlan hits the hill for Wilmington and first pitch is slated for 7 p.m. Fans can catch all of the action with the Voice of the Blue Rocks, Cory Nidoh, on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
