WARTHOGS FALL DESPITE 13 HITS

Despite 13 hits from the offense, the Winston-Salem Warthogs fell to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 7-6 on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Sporting the Warthogs name in honor of the team's previous moniker, Winston-Salem had five players rack up multiple hits. Steele Walker led the way with three hits and two RBIs. Along with Walker, Craig Dedelow, Carlos Perez, Yeyson Yrizarri and Tate Blackman all notched multi-hit games. But, with the Dash leading 6-4 in the top of the sixth, Tyler Payne launched a three-run homer that proved to be the difference for Myrtle Beach.

RECAPPING THE FIRST HALF

With a victory against Carolina on June 16, Winston-Salem clinched its third-best first-half winning percentage (.594) in the Dash era (2009-present). The Dash also ended the first half in second place in the Southern Division. By posting a .594 winning percentage, the 2019 team trailed only the 2012 club (.637) and 2010 team (.614) in first-half finishes.

WALKER, OKLAHOMA SOONER

Selected by the White Sox in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Walker is coming into his own in Winston-Salem. Rated the 10th-best prospect in Chicago's system per MLB Pipeline, Walker is now 21-for-51 (.412) with three home runs and 14 RBIs over his last 12 contests. As a part of the recent hot stretch, Walker hit for the third cycle in Dash history against Carolina on June 14, and the first Dash cycle since April 27, 2016. Although the 22-year-old's two older brothers Sam and Trevor played college football at the University of Texas, Walker chose to play baseball at the University of Oklahoma. As a member of the Sooners baseball team, Walker patrolled the outfield alongside 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray.

THE TURNING POINT OF THE YEAR

Since being 18-20 through the 38-game mark this season, the Dash are 22-11 since entering play on May 16 at Myrtle Beach, good for a .666 winning percentage.

MUST BE THAT MOUNTAIN AIR

The Dash bats put up their most productive series of the season in a four-game set at Salem from May 24-27. In winning three out of four games against the Red Sox, the Dash put up a staggering 37 runs (9.25 runs/game). Additionally, Winston combined for 60 hits in the series. In the second game of that series, the Dash posted a season-high 17 runs in a 17-3 triumph over Salem. In addition to the road series victory at Haley Toyota Field, Winston-Salem swept a doubleheader with Salem at BB&T Ballpark on June 11. As a team, the Dash are hitting .370 with a .572 slugging percentage against the Red Sox in six games.

LENDING A HAND IN TWO ROLES

Right-hander Zach Lewis will make his seventh start of the season in Thursday's contest at Salem. Lewis, who is from Palos Heights, Illinois, is pitching for the organization he grew up loving as a kid. When he was younger, he was a big fan of White Sox third baseman Joe Crede, a key member of the 2005 Chicago White Sox team that won a World Series. Lewis has pitched in the bullpen and in the rotation for Winston-Salem this season. In his first outing of the season, he replaced an injured Lincoln Henzman on Opening Day to earn a victory over the Keys by tossing 6.2 strong innings. As a reliever this year, Lewis has thrived, posting a 3.38 ERA in 10 appearances. Meanwhile, in a starting role, the right-hander is 0-2 with a 10.48 ERA in six starts.
