Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves won their third straight game in a 3-2 thriller against the Connecticut Defenders at Dodd Stadium on Friday night.
The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the first inning against Connecticut starter Joey Martinez. Will Rhymes led off the game with his 154th hit of the season. James Skelton followed and laid down a bunt. On the play, Skelton beat out the throw from Martinez and the throw went up the right field line allowing Rhymes to reach third and Skelton to advance to second. Casper Wells followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Rhymes for a 1-0 Erie lead.
Erie would go ahead 2-0 in the top of the fifth. Deik Scram led off with a single and moved over to third on a hit-and-run by Santo De Leon setting up a pair on base with no outs. Pedro Cotto grounded home Scram for the run.
In the top of the sixth, Wells led off with a double to the gap in left-center for Erie's first extra-base hit of the game. Wells came in to score on a one-out single by Ryan Roberson, putting the âWolves ahead 3-0.
Erie starter Luke French carried a shutout into the sixth inning but the Defenders took advantage of a defensive miscue to get on the board. Antoan Richardson led off and beat out a bunt single. With one out, Eliezer Alfonzo singled to put runners on the corners. Eddy Martinez-Esteve then came to the plate and sharply grounded a ball under the glove of Roberson at first and the error allowed Richardson to score making it a 3-1 game. Alfonzo would later score on a groundout by Simon Klink to make it a one-run game at 3-2.
Josh Kite came into the game and retired the final hitter of the eighth and returned looking for a save in the ninth. He struck out Dave Maroul for the first out but Mike Mooney followed and reached on an error by Caonabo Cosme at second to put the tying run on base. Julio Cordido then came to the plate and worked the count full. On the payoff pitch, Kite struck out Cordido and Skelton threw down to second for the final out of the game to retire Mooney who was running on the play. Kite picked up his first save as Erie won the game 3-2.
French won his second straight decision improving his record to 8-11. He went six innings, allowing two runs, both unearned, on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
