Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves slugged their way to a series win over the Altoona Curve with a 10-7 win on Sunday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark. Altoona struck first against Erie starter Andy Oliver in the bottom of the first inning. Gorkys Hernandez singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hernandez would later score on an error and Altoona took a 1-0 lead.
Curve starter Rudy Owens held the SeaWolves at bay for the first three innings. In the fourth, Cesar Nicolas walked with one out and with two outs, Michael Bertram connected on an opposite-field, two-run home run for a 2-1 Erie lead. The home run for Bertram was his second in as many games.
Altoona tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Alex Presley singled home Matt Hague.
In the fifth, Erie would regain the lead. Max St. Pierre led off and connected on a solo home run to left, his fifth, for a 3-2 lead. St. Pierre has now hit four home runs against Altoona. Shawn Roof followed with a single and with one out, Andy Dirks walked to put runners on first and second for Wilkin Ramirez. Ramirez singled up the middle, scoring Roof for a 4-2 lead. Nicolas followed with a single, scoring Dirks for a 5-2 lead.
Erie would tack on three more in the top of the seventh for an 8-2 lead. Roof led off with his second single of the game. Josh Burrus then walked and Dirks reached on an error to load the bases for Ramirez. Ramirez pulled a bases-clearing double down the left field line for the six-run lead. Ramirez now has eight RBI with the bases loaded.
The scoring wouldn't stop in the eighth for Erie as St. Pierre led off with a triple against reliever Ronald Uviedo. It was just the third triple of St. Pierre's career and his first since 2006. Roof grounded out, scoring St. Pierre for a 9-2 lead. With the bases clear, Burrus turned on a 3-2 pitch and connected on his third home run of the season for a 10-2 lead.
Altoona would not go quietly as they struck for four in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 10-6 game.
In the ninth, Brendan Wise came in to shut the door. Kris Watts led off with his second double of the game and moved to third as Shelby Ford reached on an error. Hernandez grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Watts to make it 10-7. Wise would end the game inducing a 4-3 double play off the bat of Jose De Los Santos.
Oliver (3-1) picked up the win going a season-high 7.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Oliver joins L.J. Gagnier as the second three-game winner for Erie.
The SeaWolves return home on Monday night for a three-game series against Akron...6:35 First Pitch.
