Chesapeake Baysox News Release
TRENTON, N.J. -- The Bowie Baysox were demolished by the Trenton Thunder 15-4 Sunday afternoon, dropping under .500 for the first time all season after being swept in three games by the Thunder. It is the Baysox fourth consecutive loss, putting them at 15-16 and in fourth place in the six-team Eastern League Western Division, five games behind Altoona.
Baysox starting pitcher Zach Britton was knocked around the park for six runs (five earned) off four hits through five innings. He didn't do himself any favors by throwing three wild pitches in the game, but most devastating was a long three-run blast to left field by outfielder Dan Brewer in the bottom of the fifth inning that blew open a four-run lead that the Baysox never recovered from.
Trenton savaged the Baysox bullpen after Britton exited the mound with a nine-run sixth frame that had relievers Jim Hoey and Chad Thall reeling as they combined to give up seven hits and three walks in the inning.
Bowie got off to a promising start, as center fielder Jonathan Tucker singled into left field to start the game and was immediately followed by a base hit to center by second baseman Ryan Adams. Tucker and Adams both got the signal to take off as Tyler Henson struck out and safely stole second and third base. First baseman Robbie Widlansky sent both runners home to open a 2-0 lead with a double up the middle, his fifth of the year.
The lead did not last long, after an RBI triple by Trenton's second baseman David Adams in the bottom of the first inning. Third baseman Brandon Laird grounded out to second base, allowing Adams to score from third and tie it up 2-2.
The Thunder picked up a go-ahead run in the third inning with Brewer grounding into a double play as shortstop Luis Nunez scored, and Brewer's bomb in the fifth made it 6-2.
Trenton-born pitcher Jim Hoey came on for Britton to start the sixth inning, but did not recieve a warm welcome from his hometown club as he gave up two singles and a walk to load up the bases with one out before first baseman Marcos Vechionacci hit a two-RBI double up the gap. Lefty Chad Thall came on to stop the bleeding, but was battered in much the same fashion, giving up three doubles to go with four earned runs of his own before he escaped the inning with the Baysox sinking fast at 15-2. The Thunder sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning, and it took 57 pitches to get the three outs.
Pedro Florimon picked up a consolation run off a wild pitch in the top of the seventh stanza and scored another in the ninth as Henson grounded out for his team-leading 20th RBI of the season. The futile scoring was little bother to Thunder closer Grant Duff, who entered in the ninth inning to protect a 12-run lead.
The Baysox return to Bowie with a 3-7 record from their 10-day road trip and hope to rebound as they open a homestand against the Richmond Flying Squirrels and Erie SeaWolves on Monday, May 10 at 7:35 p.m. The first game back will feature Baltimore native Steve Johnson (1-2, 3.66) on the mound for Bowie against Richmond's Ronnie Ray (0-1, 6.57).
Monday's game will also be the Baysox inaugural Beard-a-Palooza, where any fan with a beard may purchase half-priced lower reserved seat tickets ($7) for the game, limit one per beard. Fans who cannot grow a beard are encouraged to make one! Between-inning contests include "What's In the Beard" and longest and most colorful beards.
