New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - Portland's Kyle Weiland retired all 15 batters he faced and the Sea Dogs' staff combined to one-hit the Rock Cats in a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. The bullpen woes continued for New Britain as the Rock Cats managed to tie the game in the seventh only to allow the eventual winning run on a bases loaded walk.
In the sixth, Weiland handed the ball over to Robert Coello, who kept the perfect game bid alive by retiring three-straight batters in the inning. The streak came to and end when Coello (4-1) plunked leadoff man Ben Revere in the bottom of the seventh for the Rock Cats' first base runner. Revere immediately stole second base - his tenth of the season - before moving to third on Estarlin De Los Santos' sacrifice bunt. Revere came around to score on a two-out single by Juan Portes that tied the game, 1-1.
The tie didn't last long as Portland jumped on relief man Henry Arias, who had tossed a scoreless seventh, in the eighth. Ray Chang (3-for-4) led off the eighth with a base hit to left and Luis Exposito reached on a walk. Yamaico Navarro followed with a sac bunt that was fielded by Arias, who fired to third too late and allowed the Sea Dogs to load the bases with one out. Chris Province came on in relief of Arias and forced Jose Iglesias into a groundout that forced pinch runner Juan Apodaca - who entered the game after Chang was injured at third - out at home. Province then walked Chih-Hsien to force in Exposito for the go-ahead run.
Rock Cats starter Mike McCardell pitched six solid innings after he ran into trouble in the first inning. After forcing the first two batters he faced in the game to pop out to left field, he allowed a base hit to Chang. McCardell then lost control, walking Exposito before unleashing a wild pitch that allowed both runners to move into scoring position. McCardell had several pitches sail high to the plate and he ended up walking Navarro to load the bases. The first pitch to Iglesias sailed in high as well before pitching coach Stu Cliburn made a visit to the mound. McCardell fired a strike with his next pitch and eventually forced Iglesias to fly out to right field to escape the inning.
McCardell finished with four hits and one run while striking out four. Arias (0-1) suffered the loss for the Rock Cats. Bryson Cox notched his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth for the Sea Dogs.
