CURVE, Pa. - A late-innings rally attempt by the Altoona Curve fell three runs short as the Curve fell to the SeaWolves, 10-7, on Sunday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark. Andy Oliver (3-1) earned the win for Erie while Rudy Owens (3-1) suffered the loss for Altoona.

It was Altoona who got on the scoreboard first by taking a, 1-0, lead in the first inning when Jim Negrych reached on an error by ‘Wolves second baseman Shawn Roof and Gorkys Hernandez came around to touch home plate.

Owens breezed through the first three innings of the game, striking out five and allowing just one hit, but ran into trouble in the fourth when he allowed a two-run home run to Michael Bertram that gave Erie its first lead of the day at 2-1.

Trailing for the first time in the game, the Curve answered right back in the bottom half of the fourth when Alex Presley legged out an infield single to score Matt Hague from third to tie the game. It would be the last run Altoona would score until the eighth inning.

Erie responded to the, 2-2, tie game with three runs in the fifth, three in the seventh and two more in the eighth. The ‘Wolves chased Owens after five innings and the starter permitted five runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and three walks. Michael Dubee worked two innings for Altoona and gave up three runs (two earned). Ronald Uviedo also worked a pair of innings for the Curve and gave up two runs.

All told, the Altoona pitching staff struck out a total of 16 batters, which set a new franchise record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game. The previous record had been 15 games, which had been accomplished three previous times in team history. The last time it occurred was on May 2, 2008 versus Erie.

The Curve rallied in the eighth against Oliver and the SeaWolves bullpen by sending nine men to the plate and scoring four runs. Oliver left two batters into the inning and finished the game pitching 7.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. Hague, Negrych, Josh Harrison and Presley each recorded an RBI in the inning.

Altoona added one more in the ninth on a fielder's choice groundout by Hernandez but that would end the scoring. Hague finished the game 2-for-4 as did catcher Kris Watts while Presley was the only member of the lineup to record a multi-RBI game.

The Harrisburg Senators will make their second trip to Blair County Ballpark beginning Monday at 6:30 p.m. Altoona (19-10) sends E.L. wins leader Jared Hughes (5-1, 4.40) to the mound in the lid lifter while Harrisburg counters with LHP Aaron Thompson (1-3, 4.67).

It's Golf Night and a Mirror Monday at BCB where fans can save money on tickets with a coupon from the front page of the sports section in the Altoona Mirror. Radio coverage begins at 6 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Altoona Curve Radio Network.
