Erie SeaWolves News Release

A night after striking for season-high's in both hits and runs scored, the SeaWolves took down the Reading Phillies in the second game of a four-game series at First Energy Stadium by a score of 14-2. The win improved the SeaWolves to 16-8 following the all-star break. The club has also won seven of the last eight games.

The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the first against Reading starter Edgar Garcia. James Skelton doubled with one out and was driven home on a base knock by Wilkin Ramirez for a 1-0 Erie lead.

The 'Wolves then took a 2-0 advantage in the third inning. Caonabo Cosme tripled, his first, with one out and eventually scored on a wild pitch for the two-run lead.

Reading got on the board against Erie starter Guillermo Moscoso in the bottom of the third. Mike Eylward led off with a double and he scored on a one-out double by Tony Mansolino, cutting Erie's lead down to a run at 2-1.

The 'Wolves would then strike in a big way in the top of the fourth. Casper Wells led off with a walk and that was followed by a Ryan Roberson double to put runners on second and third for Deik Scram. Scram connected on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Wells for a 3-1 lead. Jeff Frazier and Santo De Leon both walked to load the bases for Cosme. Cosme singled home Roberson for his second hit of the game and a 4-1 Erie lead. With the bases still loaded, Will Rhymes blooped a single down the left field line scoring Frazier for a 5-1 advantage. Skelton then hit into a fielder's choice with Rhymes being retired at second, and allowing De Leon to score for a 6-1 Erie lead. Ramirez then clubbed a three-run home run, his 16th, over the wall in center for a 9-1 'Wolves lead.

The Phillies cut the lead down to seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. John Suomi led off with a double and he scored on a two-out single by Mansolino to make it a 9-2 game. That would be as close as the R-Phils would get in the game.

Erie struck big once again in the top of the sixth. Rhymes led off with a walk and Ramirez slammed his second home run of the game with one out for an 11-2 lead. The homer was the 17th on the season for Ramirez and he finished the game with six RBI. He is the first SeaWolf to collect six RBI in a game this season. With two outs, Roberson walked and Scram singled to put runners on first and second for Frazier. The runners both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch by reliever Brett Harker and Frazier followed with a two-run single passed a diving Neil Sellers at third to put Erie up 13-2.

The 'Wolves would complete the night's scoring in the top of the eighth when Wells led off with a solo home run, his 11th, putting Erie ahead 14-2.

Moscoso improved to 2-0 going six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. Moscoso has struck out 19 in 12 innings since joining the SeaWolves. He faced just three over the minimum in his six innings of work.

Scott Drucker, Matt Rusch and Danny Zell combined to throw three shutout innings to close out the game for the 'Wolves.

Erie has outscored Reading 29-5 in the first two games of the series. It was the first time Erie has struck for 10 or more runs in a game since taking back-to-back losses April 11-12 to Binghmton by scores of 18-13 and 11-10.
