Defenders Split With Sea Dogs

Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders and Portland Sea Dogs split a doubleheader on Friday, as Connecticut edged out a 1-0 win in game one and fell late in game two, 7-5.

Thursday's contest was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the fourth inning with no one on, one out and Carlos Sosa at the plate with a 2-1 count. Portland had started Kris Johnson, but since the game was picked up on Saturday, he was replaced by Mike James. James proceeded to walk Sosa, but since the count was two balls and one strike, Sosa belonged to the starter in Johnson. Sosa stole second, Simon Klink walked, Dave Maroul singled to load the bags and Antoan Richardson delivered a sacrifice fly to left-center field to plate Sosa and give Connecticut a 1-0 lead.

Ronnie Ray took over the game for Joey Martinez and he was phenomenal. Ray allowed just two hits in three innings as he cruised to his fifth win of the season. In a bizarre twist, Johnson was pegged with the loss, his seventh as the Defs rolled to a 1-0 win.

Game two featured quite a bit more offense. Garrett Broshuis took the mound for Connecticut as David Gassner took the ball for Portland.

Portland jumped ahead in the top of the second as Argenis Diaz lifted a two-run homer over the left-field wall to give the Dogs a 2-0 advantage.

Connecticut responded in the last of the second with a flurry of runs. Mike Mooney doubled to start things off, Eddy Martinez-Esteve chopped an infield single off the third base bag and Simon Klink doubled Mooney to the plate. Dave Maroul kept the train rolling with a single of his own to plate Martinez-Esteve and Ryan Rohlinger would cap off the rally with a two-run double to give the Defenders a 4-2 lead through two.

Mooney would send a moon-shot over the left field fence in the third to push Connecticut's advantage to 5-2.

After a scoreless fourth, Broshuis was touched up for four runs on four hits as the Sea Dogs recaptured the lead, 6-5.

Josh Sharpless took over for Broshuis in the sixth and he had a hard time finding the strike zone from the word go. Sharpless would eventually walk in a run as Portland extended the game to 7-5.

Connecticut could not respond a second time as they ended the long evening with a series split. Broshuis suffered his eighth loss as he fell to 12-8, Gassner improved to 5-5 with the win and Daniel Bard locked down his third save.

The Defenders and Sea Dogs will play another twin-bill on Saturday evening starting at 5:05pm. The Saving Institute along with the Connecticut Defenders will be giving out Mike Lowell bobble-head dolls to the first 1,000 fans as the gates will open at 4:05pm.
