Trenton And Akron Split Doubleheader Friday Night

(Trenton, NJ)- Thunder Catcher P.J. Pilittere connected on the game-winning two-run single against the Akron Aeros to give Trenton a 3-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday night from Waterfront Park. Akron won the second game of the doubleheader 8-0.

With the Thunder trailing Akron 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning in the first game, Third baseman Chris Malec walked with one out against Akron reliever Randy Newsom (5-1). Thunder Left fielder Colin Curtis followed with a double to put runners at second and third base and one out. Pilittere then produced the game-winning two-run single to left field lifting Trenton to the 3-2 win. Pilittere now has four RBI in his first two games since being activated from the Disabled List.

Thunder reliever Anthony Claggett (4-2) picked up the win as he tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Newsom lost his first game, and only suffered his third blown save of the season in 29 chances. He gave up two hits and two runs in 1/3 inning. Trenton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Shortstop Ramiro Pena. Akron tied the game in the third inning on an RBI single by Second baseman Josh Rodriguez. The Aeros took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning on a solo home run by former Thunder outfielder Bronson Sardinha. Thunder starting pitcher Jason Stephens went 5 1/3 innings and allowed only three hits and two earned runs in his Double-A debut. He struck out nine and walked two.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Akron jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Third baseman Wes Hodges. In the second inning, Second baseman Andrew Pinckney hit a three-run home run off of Thunder Starting pitcher Michael Gardner (4-4) to give Akron a 4-0 lead. The lead increased to 7-0 in the third inning, as Left fielder Ryan Goleski added to the lead with a three-run home run of his own. Gardner allowed eight hits and seven runs in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. Goleski hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot off of Thunder reliever Jhonny Nunez in the fifth inning, to make it 8-0. Thunder Shortstop Reegie Corona and Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez each had doubles in the loss for the Thunder.

Trenton and Akron will play the fourth game of the five-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Eric Hacker (6-2, 2.82) will start for Trenton against LHP Scott Lewis (6-2, 2.60) for Akron.
