Tabata Assigned To Altoona Curve Roster Friday

August 8, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release

Jose Tabata, the youngest of the four players acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the six-player trade with the New York Yankees on July 26th, was officially added to the Curve's roster on Friday. Tabata, a native of Venezuela, was acquired by Pittsburgh with pitchers Jeff Karstens, Dan McCutchen and Ross Ohlendorf in a trade for pitcher Damaso Marte and outfielder Xavier Nady.

The 19-year old was 5-for-11 (.455) with two home runs, seven RBI's and four runs scored during a four-game rehab assignment with rookie-level Bradenton this past week.

Earlier this season, he hit .248 with nine doubles, three home runs, 34 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 79 games with the Eastern League's Trenton Thunder prior to the trade. Tabata played in his last game with the Thunder on July 2 before landing on the Disabled List with a hamstring injury.

Tabata becomes just the second 19-year old in Curve history. The only other teenager to play for Altoona was Andrew McCutchen, who joined the Curve at the age of 19 in August 2006.

To clear room on the Curve's 24-man roster, outfielder Anthony Webster was placed on the Disabled List.

Tabata is expected to make his Altoona debut during Friday's 6:35 p.m. game at Harrisburg.
