FORT WAYNE, IN---A two-run double by Zach Brown with two outs in the bottom of the second inning gave Fort Wayne a 2-0 lead over West Michigan on Monday night, and a quartet of pitchers made the lead stand up, as the Wizards defeated the defending Midwest League champion Whitecaps by a score of 2-1, in front of a Monday night crowd of 2,273 at Memorial Stadium.

Brown's second double of the season was a shot hit down the right field line off West Michigan starting pitcher Lauren Gagnier, and came after teammates Justin Baum and Yefri Carvajal had reached base on a lead off double and one-out single, respectively.

Fort Wayne starter Jeremy McBryde survived a shaky first inning on the mound then went on to pitch his best game in a Wizards uniform.

In the first, West Michigan loaded the bases with two outs, when Ronnie Bourquin doubled to left field, Chris Carlson reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Casper Wells drew a base on balls.

McBryde struck out Kody Kaiser to end the threat, then allowed just two base hits over the next four innings.

One of those hits was a one-out single by Kyle Peter in the third inning, and the other Adrian Casanova's first home run of the season, a blast that cleared both the 16-foot high wall and 25-foot high tater sack in left field leading off in the fifth inning.

Matt Teague replaced McBryde on the mound and stranded a pair of Whitecap base runners in both the sixth and seventh inning, before giving way to Derek McDaid, who retired the side in order in the eighth.

McDaid, in turn, was replaced on the mound by Jackson Quezada, who hurled a perfect ninth, to preserve the first win by the Wizards since they defeated Burlington by a score of 4-3 on May 5th.

McBryde (1-3) picked his first win of the season.

Gagnier (1-4), who allowed the two runs on six hits, didn't walk anybody, and struck out seven in seven innings of work, suffered the loss.

Quezada collected his second save in two save opportunities in 2008.

Now that their five-game losing streak has been snapped, Fort Wayne will attempt to make it two wins in a row over West Michigan, when the two teams meet each other again on Tuesday night, in the second game of a four-game series.

Right-hander Mat Latos (0-2, 2.57) will make his fourth start of the season for the Wizards, while the Whitecaps will send southpaw Jon Kibler (2-1, 2.81) to the mound. The game can be heard on both the radio (ESPN Radio 1380) and the Internet (www.fortwaynewizards.com), beginning with the Hupe Insurance Services Pre-Game Show at 5:40 p.m. (EDT).
