West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - For the second straight week, a West Michigan Whitecap was named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week. LHP Ramon Garcia won the award for the week of May 5-11 thanks to his complete-game shutout against Lansing last week.

Garcia made his seventh start of 2008 on Thursday, May 8 at Lansing, firing a three-hit complete-game shutout with just one walk and five strikeouts on 110 pitches. The southpaw from Yamasa, Dominican Republic was then promoted to High-A Lakeland on May 10.

His shutout improved his season totals to 4-3 with a 2.81 ERA through seven starts with West Michigan. This was the second time Garcia has won the MWL Pitcher of the Week award, also winning it on May 22, 2006.

Signed by the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on May 24, 2004, Garcia posted a 9-3 record and 2.49 ERA in his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Tigers in 2004. He spent the 2005 season in the Gulf Coast League before going 7-2 with a 1.92 ERA in 12 starts with the Whitecaps in 2006. Garcia was shutdown midway through 2006 and needed surgery in the offseason to repair a bone spur in his left shoulder. While battling through injuries last season, Garcia made only six appearances between Lakeland and West Michigan.

This was the second consecutive Whitecap to be named MWL Player of the Week award with RHP Alfredo Figaro winning the award last week.
