Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING - The Lansing Lugnuts have allowed just five earned runs over their last five games, but the club's hitting woes continued Monday night as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the Dayton Dragons before 1,208 fans at Oldsmobile Park. The loss dropped the Lugnuts under .500 for the first time since their Opening Day loss to Fort Wayne.

Runs were at a premium throughout the game as each pitching staff dominated the opposing batters. The two teams combined to strike out 24 batters and each club was only able to muster three hits apiece.

Dayton grabbed the lead in the third inning against Lansing starter Trystan Magnuson. Kevyn Feiner singled and was quickly followed by an Angel Cabrera double into right that put two men in scoring position with one out. Justin Reed's groundout plated Feiner and put the Dragons ahead 1-0. It would be the only run of the inning for the visitors.

The Dragons doubled their lead in the fifth to 2-0. Cabrera drew a walk off of reliever Luis Perez and moved to third on a single into left-center field by Reed. While running to third, Cabrera was hit in the foot by an errant Darin Mastroianni throw from center. The ball ricocheted into the stands, allowing Cabrera to come home on the play.

Lansing scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when John Tolisano reached on an error, moved to third on a single by Manny Rodriguez, and scored on Mike McDade's sacrifice fly to center field.

Chris Partch (2-4) got the win for the Dragons by throwing six innings and allowing just an unearned run on two hits. He also struck out seven in his start.

Phillippe Valiquette tossed the final three frames for Dayton to pick up his first save of the year. He retired the final eight batters of the game and fanned six himself.

Trystan Magnuson (0-4) suffered the loss for the Lugnuts after allowing one run in his three inning start.

Lansing's Perez and Brad Cuthbertson combined to go the rest of the way for the Lugnuts. They sat down the final 14 Dragons that they faced.

Lansing (17-18) and Dayton (20-14) will take the field on Tuesday morning at 10:35 a.m. for the second game of the series, as the Lugnuts host Grand Slam School Day at Oldsmobile Park. Marc Rzepczynski (0-0, 1.93) will take the mound for the Lugnuts. He will be opposed by the Dragons' Enerio Del Rosario (2-1, 1.38).
