Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - First-place Wisconsin scored 5 runs in the top of the first inning and didn't slow down in a 10-2 defeat of the Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday. The Western Division leaders have won 11 of their last 14 contests en route to a 34-19 record, while Cedar Rapids (23-30) has now lost 4 games in a row.

The Kernels first run came from the bottom three hitters in the batting order. Matt Scioscia reached second base on an errant throw to first base on a groundball. After a Trevor Hairgrove single put runners at the corners, Wendell Soto slapped a groundball to right field - his 3rd RBI in 4 games.

Cedar Rapids added one more in the 8th inning on another 2-out hit, this time from Abel Baker. With Kaleb Cowart at third base - he reached on a single to extend his now-8 game hitting streak - Baker hit a line drive to centerfield for the Kernels final run.

After the first hitter of the evening was retired, five consecutive Timber Rattlers reached and scored. A walk and four straight singles equated to a 2-0 Wisconsin lead, followed by a bases-loaded strikeout. But another walk and a 2-out, 2-RBI single from Adrian Williams scored the third through fifth runs of the first frame.

Solo home runs in the 4th inning and 9th inning - by Max Walla and Greg Hopkins respectively - accounted for two more Rattlers runs, in addition to a 1-hit, 2-run 5th inning. Two consecutive singles in the 7th also scored a run for Wisconsin.

In relief of Austin Wood, right-hander Frank De Julio went 4 1/3 innings, allowed 5 hits and 3 earned runs with a strikeout. Carmine Giardina also pitched well for Cedar Rapids, allowing 3 hits in 3 innings along with no earned runs. Wood (2-4) took the loss for Cedar Rapids, while Wisconsin starter Chad Thompson (2-1) earned the victory after a stellar 6 inning, 5 hit outing with no earned runs.
