BURLINGTON, Iowa (5/30/12) - It took five tries, but the Burlington Bees (24-28) finally beat the Peoria Chiefs (23-30) with a 10-to-1 score in the fifth match up this year. The Chiefs swept the Bees in a four-game series earlier in May when the Bees were on the road.

Two facets of the game continued to work against the Chiefs as the Bees received great pitching and good defense in the win. Seth Frankoff made his second start of the season and looked brilliant through six innings. The tall right-hander might have surrendered one earned run, but most of the time the Chiefs had trouble connecting on Frankoff's offerings. He pitched six innings and only allowed four hits, while not walking one batter and striking out a career-high 11 batters. Frankoff (1-3) earned his first win of the season and looked nothing like the starter that gave up seven runs in the third inning of his first start.

The offense did its part to help Frankoff's cause by tying the game in the bottom of the second Wade Kirkland led off with a double. Kirkland scored after Ryan Pineda earned infield single that was followed by a throwing error.

With the score tied 1-to-1, the offense finally inflicted damage on the Chiefs in the fifth inning. The Bees had only scored five runs against the Chiefs in the previous four-game match-up; they scored seven runs in the fifth.

With one out and two runners in scoring position, Aaron Shipman bounced a ball down the first base line and past the drawn-in infield. Shipman earned a double and two RBIs with B.A. Vollmuth and Rashon Dixon scoring. The Bees led 3-to-1, but they had an even bigger hit coming. They loaded the bases for Chih-Fang Pan who actually stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in three consecutive innings. It was in his second try that he launched a 2-and-1 pitch over the right field wall for his second home run of the year and his first grand slam. The Bees led 7-to-1 after five innings.

The Bees' offense kept hitting in the sixth and added two runs with an RBI single by Ryan Pineda and a sacrifice fly ball from John Nester. Jonathan Joseph closed the door and earned his first save after pitching three scoreless innings to end the game. It was the second consecutive night that a Bees reliever earned a three-inning save.

The Bees try to go up two games to none against the Chiefs on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. For information on Bees baseball and promotions, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
