Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps committed two pivotal two-out errors in the top of the 10th inning on Wednesday night, as they fell 4-2 at the hands of the Great Lakes Loons. The TinCaps led 2-1 heading into the ninth inning, but a solo home run by Joe Winker tied the game. An error committed by Yeison Asencio in the 10th allowed two more runs to score, and the TinCaps lost their third straight game.

Frank Garces dazzled in his 11th start of the year. The southpaw allowed one unearned run, which scored in the first inning, and struck out eight while walking three over five innings. Garces' strikeout total Wednesday came one shy of his season high, established on opening night. He retired the final five batters of his outing in order.

Fort Wayne (24-29) notched the equalizer in the second inning. Mike Gallic led off with a double, and was singled home by Yeison Asencio. Kyle Gaedele doubled to lead off the third, but the TinCaps did not register another hit for the rest of the game.

With the help of a few walks and an error, though, Fort Wayne did take a 2-1 lead in the seventh. Lee Orr led off with a walk, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Loons starter Ryan O'Sullivan uncorked a wild pitch and when catcher Jan Vazquez recovered the ball, he attempted to gun down Orr, who was running for third. Vazquez's throw escaped third baseman Jesse Bosnik's grasp and Orr ran home to score the go-ahead run.

TinCaps pitching retired thirteen consecutive batters through the end of Garces' outing until a walk issued by Johnny Barbato in the eighth.

In the ninth, Great Lakes (28-25) right fielder Joe Winker homered off of Barbato, tying the game at two. Robert Eisenbach (0-2) entered in the 10th to pitch for the TinCaps, and he retired the first two batters on five pitches. Facing O'Koyea Dickson, Eisenbach induced a ground ball to third base. Duanel Jones scooped it up, but his throw to first sailed low and Jones was charged with an error as Dickson reached base. Following an intentional walk to Scott Schebler, Eisenbach faced Winker. The right fielder flied a ball down the right field line, which was misplayed by Yeison Asencio. Both Dickson and Schebler scored, making it 4-2 Great Lakes.

Fort Wayne was quieted over the final two innings of the game, as Loons reliever Mike Thomas (2-1) struck out six of the last seven batters he faced.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Thursday night at 7:05 PM. The scheduled starters are Adys Portillo for Fort Wayne and Gustavo Gomez for Great Lakes.
