Great Lakes Loons News Release

FORT WAYNE, IN - The Great Lakes Loons capitalized on two 10th inning errors by the Fort Wayne TinCaps to pick up a 4-2 win Wednesday night at Parkview Field. It was the Loons' second straight 10th inning win and improved the Loons to 5-1 this season in "free baseball."

The Loons' record in now 28-25, and the team moves into a tie for the final first-half playoff spot after Bowling Green lost to Lansing. The Loons are now a game ahead of South Bend after the Silver Hawks' loss to Dayton and 2 1/2 games above Lake County after the Captains lost to West Michigan.

The Loons trailed 2-1 entering the top of the ninth, when Joe Winker led off the inning with a long home run to right-center to tie the score.

Then in the top of the ninth, TinCaps reliever Robert Eisenbach got two quick outs. O'Koyea Dickson grounded to third baseman Duanel Jones, who threw errantly to first to send Dickson to second. Fort Wayne opted to intentionally walk Scott Schebler. Winker followed and hit a high fly ball to right field that was dropped by Yeison Ascencio, allowing two runs to score.

Lefty Mike Thomas (3-1) picked up the win with three scoreless relief innings. He recorded his final six outs on strikeouts, including a called strike three to Casey McElroy to end the game. Thomas also induced an inning-ending double play in his first inning of work - the eighth - on a diving stop and glove-flip by second baseman Jesus Arredondo.

Eisenbach (1-1) recorded the loss despite not giving up an earned run.

Both starting pitchers threw effectively. For the Loons, Ryan O'Sullivan pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing just five hits and one walk, striking out two. He was charged with two runs, both earned. TinCaps lefty Frank Garces threw five innings, also allowing five hits and one run. He walked three and struck out eight.

Loons pitching held the TinCaps hitless after the first time through the order. Fort Wayne's final hit was a double by Kyle Gaedele to lead off the third inning. The Loons had just one hit after the fourth, Winker's homer.

The Loons scored first in the first on a double by Dickson scoring Angelo Songco from first. Ascencio tied the score with an RBI single in the second. Fort Wayne took the lead in the seventh on a wild pitch by O'Sullivan, allowing Lee Orr to advance to score. Orr then scored on an errant throw by Jan Vazquez

The Loons (28-25) and TinCaps (24-29) square off in the second game of a three-game series Thursday night at Parkview Field. Game time is 7:05pm. Loons right-hander Gustavo Gomez (4-4, 4.29 ERA) is scheduled to start against Fort Wayne righty Adys Portillo (3-2, 1.48), the reigning league pitcher of the week. Lefty Matt Laney is scheduled to work in relief for the Loons. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and online at ESPN1009.com.

The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season.
