STRONG PITCHING CARRIES DASH
Three Dash pitchers limited Carolina to 1-for-13 hitting with men in scoring position in Winston-Salem's 5-2 win in Wednesday's series opener at Five County Stadium. Matt Heidenreich gave up just an unearned run over six innings. Big league rehabber Nate Jones permitted just a solo shot in the seventh before Andre Wheeler whiffed three in two scoreless frames for his first save of 2015. Offensively, Keon Barnum was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Jeremy Dowdy plated two runs.
THE TIME IS HEIDENREICH
Heidenreich collected his 10th victory of the season on Wednesday. Not only does he pace the Carolina League in wins, but no other hurler has more than seven. Heidenreich is the third High-A pitcher and 13th Minor Leaguer to reach 10 triumphs. Only three pitchers in the Minors have more wins than Heidenreich, who also stands second in the CL in innings pitched (98.2) and third in earned run average (2.46).
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL OUTING
A three-year Major Leaguer, Jones made his third rehab appearance with Winston-Salem on Wednesday. He gave up a solo shot to Carlos Franco, which was Jones' only blemish in an eight-pitch inning. During his three appearances with the Dash, Jones has only logged 24 pitches in three innings. The day and location of his next rehab appearance has yet to be announced. Jones, who pitched for Winston from 2008-10, underwent Tommy John surgery in July of 2014. For more information on Jones, turn to page four of the attached document.
TWO NEAR THE TOP
Two critical offensive cogs are riding significant hit streaks. Trey Michalczewski, who is third in the league with 50 RBIs, has hit safely in eight straight games since July 6. During this surge, he is hitting .400 (12-for-30) with six RBIs, including one in each of his last five games. Adam Engel, the CL's leader with 34 stolen bases, is on a six-game hit streak. Engel is 9-for-24 (.375) with five runs in those six contests.
ROAD WHOAS!
On June 12, the Dash were 11-22 away from BB&T Ballpark. Since then, Winston-Salem has won nine of its last 11 road contests, including five in a row since July 3. This road winning streak matches the second-longest in the Dash era (2009-present). Winston won five in a row away from the Triad from August 19-23, 2013. The Dash's longest road surge was a six-game win streak from April 18 to May 1 of 2012.
THREE BY THREE
Winston-Salem enjoys a three-game lead on all three Southern Division foes in the second half. The Dash had not enjoyed more than a one-game lead at any point during the 2013 or 2014 seasons. This is the club's biggest divisional advantage since winning the second-half crown in 2012. The Dash have owned at least a share of first place entering 19 of the first 21 days of half two. In each of the last two seasons, the Dash were in first for only 31 total days.
A SECOND HOME
For the third time in about a month, the Dash are invading Zebulon for a series against Carolina. Winston took two of three from the Mudcats from June 12-14, while Carolina returned the favor during the first three days of July. The Dash will return to Five County Stadium from August 4-6, while Carolina will invade the Triad two more times (July 22-24 and August 21-23). The Dash have claimed six of the two clubs' first 10 tilts, which have been pitcher-friendly (36-35 Dash).
DASH DOTS
Former Winston-Salem hurler Erik Johnson posted two scoreless innings in Wednesday's Triple-A All-Star Game...Johnson punched out two and gave up one hit in the International League's 4-3 win...Catcher Jeremy Dowdy has hit safely in five consecutive games (7-for-20)...Thursday starter James Dykstra has not won since April 22, when he moved to 3-0 in three starts...The White Sox top three affiliates are in first place...This includes Double-A Birmingham, winners of seven straight and 12 of its last 13.
