Frederick Keys News Release

Wilmington, De. - Jay Gonzalez racked up three RBIs for the first time in a Keys uniform, Tad Gold drove home two in a five-run second, and Mitch Horacek tossed seven quality innings to pick up his sixth win of the season in an 8-4 win over Wilmington on Thursday afternoon.

The Keys blasted six hits in the second against Blue Rocks starter Alec Mills (6-6) and reliever Kevin McCarthy. Four consecutive singles from Jeff Kemp, Brenden Webb, Adrian Marin, and a two-run line drive to center by Gold pushed the Keys ahead for good at 2-1. Two batters later, Gonzalez plated Marin and Gold for a three-run lead, and Mills left due to injury. Josh Hart finished the scoring as he picked up an RBI on a groundball that he reached on via a Blue Crew error. The six hits in the inning tied the most amount the Keys had in a single inning this year.

Wilmington scored a single tally in the first three innings against Horacek (6-9), who lasted seven innings, allowed three runs on seven hits, walked three, and struck out five. In the first, Elier Hernandez trickled an infield single to score Mauricio Ramos, who had singled as the third batter of the game.

In the second inning, Wilmington received a solo home run by Robert Pehl to cut it to a three-run Keys advantage. That dipped down to two when Santiago Nessy roped a double down the left field line to score Jack Lopez. Meanwhile, McCarthy kept the Keys bats quiet until the sixth. The bullpen arm went four innings and allowed just one run, which came off the bat of Gonzalez.

In that sixth inning, Webb and Austin Wynns earned walks, Gold singled, and Gonzalez grounded out to the shortstop to score Webb for a 6-3 Keys lead. Frederick would add two more in the seventh against Matt Alvarez on two wild pitches.

After the tough first three innings, Horacek allowed just one more hit over his final four frames. He was lifted for Jon Keller, who allowed an unearned marker in the ninth, but closed the door for the 8-4 victory. With the win, the Keys improve to 10-11 in the second half and win as many games in the last two days at Frawley Stadium as they had all season.

Frederick and the Blue Rocks continue their series Friday night from the First State. Lefty Chris Lee (2-4, 3.71) is on the rubber for the Keys and will be opposed by Wilmington right-hander Jakob Junis (3-6, 3.28). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. The Keys return to Nymeo Field on Sunday, July 19, when the Winston-Salem Dash come to town. For ticket information, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
