Frederick Keys News Release
Wilmington, De. - Tad Gold roped a go-ahead two-run double in the 11th inning and Frederick defeated Wilmington 5-2 on Wednesday night at Frawley Stadium. In the first game of the quasi-doubleheader, the Keys fell 15-10 due to a 10-run seventh inning by the Blue Crew in what was the resumption of a suspended game from last Thursday
In the back end of the pseudo-doubleheader, the Keys tied it up in the last scheduled inning, the seventh. Anthony Caronia lifted an RBI sac fly to right field to plate Gold, who was inserted as a pinch-runner in the frame. Gold then played hero in the 11th, as he ripped a pitch by Robinson Yambati (0-2) down the third base line to score Chance Sisco and Wynston Sawyer for a two-run Keys lead. Gold would score on an Adrian Marin single to hand the Keys a split of the day.
The Keys cracked the scoreboard first against Blue Rocks starter Sean Manaea, who tossed five innings of one unearned run baseball. With two outs, Jeff Kemp was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on Sisco's RBI single to make it 1-0.
Wilmington took the lead against Keys starter Matt Taylor in the home half of the fourth. Taylor, making his first start with the orange and black since April 30, had his scoreless streak of 10 innings snapped when Cody Stubbs tripled in a pair with two outs to stake the Blue Crew to a 2-1 lead. Frederick then tied it in the seventh before Gold and Marin paced the offense. Jimmy Yacabonis, Donnie Hart (3-0) both threw three scoreless innings before Cody Wheeler closed it out for his 14th save of the year.
After an hour and 32 minute delay to start the evening due to rain, the Keys and Blue Rocks continued the suspended game from last Thursday in the fourth inning with the orange and black holding a 6-1 lead. Sisco lined one to left off Yender Caramo (4-6) to score Marin and make it 7-1 Keys through four. Caramo, who relieved Manaea (3.2 innings, 10 hits, 7 runs) last week, stayed in the game and earned the win by tossing 4.1 innings of one-run baseball.
Luis Gonzalez continued from last Thursday and tossed six innings of four-run, two earned ball. He left with a 7-4 lead, but would end up with a no-decision.
Wilmington handed the Keys their worst inning of the year in the seventh, as they sent 14 batters to the box and scored 10 runs, the first time an opponent has scored 10 times in an inning against Frederick since 2006. It took four hits, five walks, two hit batters, and an error for the Blue Rocks to take a 15-8 lead. In the process, the Keys allowed 15 runs for the first time this season. Dylan Rheault (1-2) faced five batters, hit one, walked two, allowed two hits, and allowed five runs. Nik Nowottnick faced six, recorded one out, and gave up five runs, three earned. Williams Louico gave up a run in the final 1.2 innings of the game.
Josh Hart recorded a career-high five hits, a pair of doubles and three singles, to become the first Key to smack five hits in a game this year. Last Thursday, the Blue Rock opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Humberto Arteaga singled with one out and moved to third on a fielder's choice and a throwing error by Tanner Witt. One batter later, Santiago Nessy brought his teammate home with a sac-fly.
In the second the Keys scored four times off Manaea. All four runs came with two outs, as singles by Jeff Kemp and Wynston Sawyer and a walk to Tanner Witt loaded the bases. Jay Gonzalez and Josh Hart would then cash in with back-to-back base hits to make it 3-1, before a wild pitch brought Gonzalez home. Manaea needed more than 30 pitches to complete the inning.
Frederick added single markers in the third and fourth. Sawyer added an RBI double to score Austin Wynns in the third, while a double by Hart and a single by Marin completed the Keys scoring. The Keys scored a tally in the sixth and two more in the ninth.
The Keys and the Blue Rocks continue their series on Thursday morning from the Delaware Riverfront. Lefty Mitch Horacek (5-9, 4.33) makes the start for the Keys and will be opposed by Wilmington right-hander Alec Mills (6-5, 2.39). First pitch is slated for 11:05 a.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. The Keys return to Nymeo Field on Sunday, July 19, when the Winston-Salem Dash come to town. For ticket information, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
