ZEBULON, NC - Connor Lien doubled, singled and scored twice, Dustin Peterson drove in two runs with two hits and Lucas Sims struck out eight over six quality innings as the Mudcats defeated the visiting Dash 4-2 at Five County Stadium on Thursday night.
Carolina (44-46, 10-11) collected four hits (4-for-8) with runners in scoring position in the victory and turned three double plays in support of Sims (W, 3-4, 5.18) and relievers Kyle Kinman and Richie Tate (S, 2). Winston-Salem (41-48, 11-8) allowed the Mudcats to score first and struck out 11 times in the loss.
Sims set a new season high with eight strikeouts and allowed just one run over six quality innings while earning his first win since May 9. He allowed two hits in the first, but escaped the inning with back-to-back strikeouts and held the Dash without run through the fifth.
Dykstra (L, 3-8, 3.77) took the loss after allowing four runs over six innings pitched. He struck out three and scattered seven hits while suffering his eighth loss of the season.
Lien scored the first run of the game in the first after reaching second on a hustle double to left. He then stole third and scored moments later on a liner to right by Peterson. Lien was 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base in the victory. Peterson was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. He was 1-for-20 over his previous five games before Thursday night.
Johan Camargo started the Carolina third with a line drive to center off Dykstra. He eventually stole second and scored later in the inning on Peterson's second run scoring hit of the night. Camargo, Lien, Joey Meneses and Peterson each stole a bag in the win.
Carolina led 2-0 through the fifth before the Dash rallied for one run in the sixth against Sims. That run scored after Adam Engel walked with one out in the sixth and later came in on a two-out RBI single by Trey Michalczewski later in the inning. Michalczewski was 3-for-3 with a RBI and a walk in the loss for the Dash. The sixth ended with Michalzcewski at second when Keon Barnum struck out looking to end the inning.
Dykstra stayed in for the sixth and Carolina managed to tack on two more runs against him. Lien started the frame with a single and moved to third moments later on a groundout to third by Peterson. Franco drove Lien in with a double to right and then scored one batter later on a single to right center from Meneses to make it 4-1.
The Mudcats rallied for two in the sixth and led 4-1 until Kinman allowed a run in the eighth. He started his appearance with a scoreless seventh and allowed just one run and one hit over two innings pitched. He also walked two and struck out two while earning his first hold with Carolina.
Tate pitched the ninth and closed the game out after allowing a hit, but facing only three in the inning. The Mudcats turned a 4-6-3 double play in the ninth behind Tate and he closed the game with a strikeout of T.J. Williams.
