LAST TIME OUT: Lynchburg dropped a pair of games in a doubleheader to the Salem Red Sox, losing the first game 4-3 in extra innings and falling 4-1 in the second game on Wednesday night...Lynchburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI double by NELLIE RODRIGUEZ that scored CLINT FRAZIER...Both teams went scoreless through the next four innings until the Red Sox plated three in the top of the sixth...DACE KIME turned in another quality start for the Hillcats, his fourth in his last six games, but earned a no-decision in the effort...KIME pitched six innings and allowed just two earned runs on three hits while walking and striking out three...ERIC HAASE walked to lead off the seventh inning and DORSSYS PAULINO doubled in his Lynchburg debut to put runners at second and third with no outs...HAASE scored when a balk was called on GERMAN TAVERAS to bring the 'Cats within one...YHOXIAN MEDINA tied the game at three on a single that scored PAULINO to make it 3-all and send the game to extra innings...Each team went scoreless in the eighth, but Salem plated a run in the top of the ninth on a RBI groundout by VINICIO to give Salem a 4-3 lead...CLAUDIO BAUTISTA and MEDINA reached on back-to-back walks with one out, but both were left stranded to end the first game...ANTONIO ROMERO took the mound for Lynchburg in the second gameand hings didn't go well from the beginning for ROMERO as Salem plated three runs in the top of the first...Four of the first five batters reached on base hits for the Red Sox as YOILAN CERSE, KEVIN HELLER, and JORDAN PROCYSHEN recorded RBIs to put the Sox up 3-0... Lynchburg was held scoreless through the game until the bottom of the seventh inning when SICNARF LOOPSTOK cranked out his first home run as a Hillcat to cut the lead to three, but Salem held on for a 4-1 win to sweep the doubleheader.
VS. SALEM: Lynchburg is 9-4 against Salem this season and all but one of the wins have come on the road at LewisGale Field...Last time the Red Sox were in town, the visit was cut short as the third game of the series was postponed due to rain...The teams split the two games they did play, with the Hillcats cranking out a season-high 15 runs in a shutout on July 4 and Salem rallying back with a 5-3 victory in the second game...Lynchburg has outscored Salem 87-52 in head-to-head matchups this season...In 12 contests against the Red Sox, the Hillcats are hitting .291 as a team and have collected 11 home runs and 84 RBIs...In the season series, the road team has recorded an unbelievable 13-1 record...In Lynchburg's five losses to Salem at City Stadium, the Red Sox have outscored the Hillcats 28-8 for an average margin of victory of 3.8 runs per game...Of Lynchburg's victories at LewisGale Field, perhaps the most memorable came on June 28 when MIKE PAPI hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the ninth and BRADLEY ZIMMER belted a grand slam to give Lynchburg a 10-6 victory...It marked the third time this season that Salem lost in the final inning due to a home run, which includes a walk-off home run in Myrtle Beach by BILLY MCKINNEY on May 8...The teams will meet a total of 26 times this season, 19 of which come in the second half...Four of the Hillcats eight regular position players have a batting average of .300 or greater against Salem, led by MIKE PAPI who is hitting .326 with eight doubles, nine RBIs and eight runs scored in 11 games...TZU-WEI LIN leads Salem with a .372 average including three doubles, a triple, and nine runs scored in 11 contests..
DOUBLE TROUBLE: With the pair of losses last night to Salem, the Hillcats have been swept in six of the 10 doubleheaders they have played in this season...The Hillcats are now 6-14 in twin bills this season, which is the worst record in the Carolina League...Lynchburg has already played in 10 doubleheaders this season giving the Hillcats the most doubleheaders they have played in a single season dating back to the 2005 campaign...The previous high mark was set in 2013 when the squad participated in nine doubleheaders during that season.
THE PEOPLES PITCHER: Hillcats pitcher MICHAEL PEOPLES will take the mound today against Salem...Lynchburg has been on a tear when PEOPLES gets the call...Over his last 10 starts, PEOPLES is 5-0 with five no-decisions and the Hillcats have won eight of the 10 games he has started...Over his last 10 starts, PEOPLES has seen his ERA drop from 8.00 all the way down to 4.87 and he has allowed 20 earned runs during that span for a mere two runs per game...His ERA over the last 10 starts is 3.23.
GET ON BOARD: With a single in each game on Friday, CLINT FRAZIER extended his consecutive on-base streak to 21 games...During that span, FRAZIER has seen his on-base percentage jump 19 points from .332 to .351...The streak by FRAZIER set his longest of the season...He owns the two longest on-base streaks this season for the Hillcats as he also recorded a 19 game consecutive on-base streak earlier this season...NELLIE RODRIGUEZ has the third longest streak, reaching base in 16 straight games...FRAZIER ranks fourth on the team in on-base percentage...MIKE PAPI leads the way with a .375 on-base percentage this season...The current Carolina League season-high for consecutive games on-base is held by Myrtle Beach's CHESNY YOUNG, who is currently on a 34 game on-base streak.
ODD COUPLE: It seems as if Lynchburg and Salem are confused about which stadium actually belongs to them...Throughout the season series between the two squads, the visiting team holds an astounding 13-1 record...The Hillcats are 8-0 on the road at LewisGale Field this season and have the only home win between the two teams that came in a 15-0 victory at home on July 4...Lynchburg has outscored Salem at LewisGale field by a 63-24 margin or an average of 4.9 runs per game...The Red Sox are 5-1 at City Stadium and have outscored the Hillcats 28-24 in road contests.
ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END!: With a 0-for-3 performance in the first game last night, outfielder MIKE PAPI saw his Carolina League-leading 15 games hit streak come to an end...During that span, PAPI recorded at least one hit in each contest and went 21-for-54 (.389) with two home runs, nine doubles, 12 RBIs, and 11 runs scored...Unofficially, PAPI'S streak is at 16 games...He singled in the first inning of a suspended game on June 27 against Winston-Salem...The all-time Carolina League record for most consecutive games hit safely was set all the way back in 1948 by ORGE PAT COOPER of the Martinsville A's who hit safely in 31 consecutive games.
BYE BYE, BRADLEY: After appearing in the MLB Futures Game on Sunday, outfielder BRADLEY ZIMMER received the news that he was being promoted to Double-A Akron to join fellow Hillcats JOE SEVER, CASEY WEATHERS, and ADAM PLUTKO with the RubberDucks...ZIMMER led the Hillcats and ranked second in the Carolina League in batting average with a .305 mark and ranked among the league leaders in stolen bases with 32 (T-1st), home runs with 10 (T-3rd), hits with 87 (3rd), on-base percentage with a .401 mark (2nd), and led the league with 59 runs scored...With ZIMMER'S promotion, the Cleveland Indians have promoted DORSSYS PAULINO to fill his spot...PAULINO led Lake County with 39 RBIs at the time of his promotion...He also led the entire Indians Minor League system with a .322 average in 2012 when he split time between the Arizona League Indians and Mahoning Valley.
