POTOMAC PULLS AWAY FROM DASH
The Potomac Nationals plated seven runs in Sunday's final three innings to cruise past the Dash 8-2 at BB&T Ballpark. Trey Michalczewski tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning with a two-out RBI double. However, Potomac quickly regained the lead in the next half inning with four runs, three of which were unearned. Winston-Salem starter Brandon Brennan posted his second quality start, but he permitted all four of those seventh-inning runs (five overall). Thus, the Dash must win Monday to salvage a split in this series, Potomac's final trip to the Triad.
MEET ME ON THE HILL, IT'S GOING DOWN
Even though Brennan gave up those five runs, he recorded Winston-Salem's fifth consecutive quality start. However, the Dash gave up five earned runs on Sunday after allowing only seven in their previous six games. Still, in their last seven games, four of which have been wins, Winston-Salem's pitching staff boasts a 1.71 earned run average (12 ER in 63.0 IP). The Dash are fourth on the circuit in team ERA (3.39). If the season ended today, Winston would own its best team ERA in the Dash era (2009-present), besting its 3.71 mark in 2012.
MASHING MICHALCZEWSKI
Thanks to a two-hit effort Sunday, Michalczewski pushed his season-long hitting streak to seven games. Since last Monday, the former seventh-round pick is 11-for-26 (.423) with five RBIs and four runs scored. Michalczewski has collected an RBI in four straight games. He is third in the CL in RBIs at 49. Teammate Jake Peter is fourth on the circuit with 42 RBIs.
WATCHING THE DASH ON AN OFF DAY
Winston-Salem will enjoy an off day Tuesday for the MLB All-Star Game, but a pair of Dash alumni will suit up in Cincinnati. Chris Sale (8-4, 2.72 ERA) will represent the White Sox for a fourth straight season, while Hector Santiago (6-4, 2.33 ERA), now with the Angels, was named an injury replacement. Both are in the top seven in the American League in ERA.
JONES SHARP IN RETURN TO WINSTON
Three-year big league veteran Nate Jones is scheduled to pitch out of the bullpen for the Dash on Monday night. In his first appearance during this rehab assignment, Jones needed just eight pitches in a scoreless eighth frame on Friday. In July of 2014, Jones underwent Tommy John surgery, and he had not pitched in a game since April 3, 2014, until Friday. This marks the second rehab stint in the Dash era. Brent Morel played in seven games with the Dash in 2012.
POTOMAC'S PAIN
The Nationals have not enjoyed most of their recent visits to Winston-Salem. The Dash boast a 39-17 (.696) record against the P-Nats at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem has had a winning record against the Nationals in each of its first five seasons at the downtown facility, including a perfect 10-0 mark in 2012. However, this trend is on the line in Monday's contest. The Dash and P-Nats have split their first six games at BB&T Ballpark in 2015, with Monday being the final clash between the two clubs in the Triad.
ROSTER MOVES
The Chicago White Sox announced Monday that outfielder Nick Basto has earned a promotion to Winston-Salem from Low-A Kannapolis. In 42 games with the Intimidators, Basto hit .217 with three homers and 18 RBIs after spending his first 36 games with the Dash. In a corresponding move, the White Sox assigned fellow outfielder Michael Suiter to Kannapolis.
DASH DOTS
The Dash matched their most lopsided loss of the campaign on Sunday, which marked the seventh time this year that Winston-Salem has dropped a game by exactly six runs...Winston has not lost a game by more than six runs since August 27, 2014, a 16-5 loss at Myrtle Beach... Following Monday's series finale with Potomac, the Dash will enjoy the league-wide off day on Tuesday before visiting Zebulon for a four-game set with the Carolina Mudcats.
